This is clearly a manufactured cover created for philatelic interest and is not an authentic postally necessary bisect.

All bisects from this era are philatelic. It's all but guaranteed that this cover was handstamped at the post office and handed back to the "sender", and never actually went through the system.

This brings up a question: I can't remember the timing, but Postal regs. prohibited the use of bi-sects at some point, but I believe bi-sects were use for some time after they were prohibited. At what point in time have the experts determined any bi-sects to be of only philatelic use,or, is it just a case of judging each cover on it own merits?

Further documentation to support the philatelic use of the referenced cover is the fact that a Google search shows that the addressee of the cover, Fred Noske, was the owner of the former Arcade Stamp and Coin Company of Milwaukee (1930s), a member of the APS at one time held different positions in the Milwaukee Philatelic Society and later the Milwaukee Federation of Stamp Clubs.

Scott lists bisects until 1875, but I am not sure that they were ever "officially allowed" or just tolerated up to that point and then denied. I am sure that someone with the postal regs will give us the lowdown.

This was a contrived cover for someone. 1˝˘ wouldn't have carried that letter through the mails especially past the postmaster or clerk that would have hand cancelled it but it's cancelled with such care it most certainly a courtesy cancel. I have really elaborate mosaic type stamp configurations and different bisects from this period- from a lot of different periods for that matter! Someone will probably flip the Curtis Jenny before it's all over with! lol Still I like it and thank you for sharing it with us.

I have two bisect covers addressed to the same person. My guess is he created a bunch. Mine are also very crisp and clean and likely were handbacks that did not go through the mail. I still like them and even if they are purely philatelic the numbers created have to be fairly low. How much is a bunch? He may have made dozens or hundreds, we may never know for sure. All I can tell you for certain is he made at least three.
