Are you referring to the cut square? That general design was used on envelopes starting in 1870. There are 1883 official envelopes with the O S overprints, but yours looks sort of anemic. There is a slanted S variety, but the letters on yours seem too thin.
I am no expert on this stuff, but maybe this gives you more to search with.
