I was contacted not too long ago by Ray and Al whilst en route to a stamp show. It was about another Jersey Shore cover that they thought I would be interested in...they was absolutely correct! Well, now I am the proud owner of 2 of these magnificent covers! I haven't got to do any research on this 'lil bugger yet but I wanted to share it. Here is the sellers image-

A friend of mine "Zuzu" found this about the cover's recipient! Quite fascinating too!

She wrote:

"That's gorgeous, Jeff!

Based on my quick Googling, you should have fun researching the addressee. Here's a book: The life and adventures of E.S. Carter: including a trip across the plains and mountains in 1852, Indian wars in the early days of Oregon in the years of 1854-5-6. Life and experience in the gold fields of California, and five years' travel in New Mexico"

Here is the link to the online book! I started reading it already too!

Not to put a wrench into your research, but I found that book link, too, but it's NOT the same E.S. Carter. (Keep in mind "Carter" is a very common name.)

The E.S. Carter you're looking for in connection with the cover is one Edward S. Carter formerly of Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania and later from Keokuk, Iowa. Here's a basic genealogical research information link that connects the above cover to both Jersey Shore, PA and Keokuk, IA:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/carte...s/12303.html

A US Census review of Edward S. Carter of Keokuk, Iowa, who's wife was Mary (agrees with the above link) was a salesman by trade and appears to have been an inventor of sorts, involved in some patents for a railroad car coupling and boot blacking case, as shown in the links below:

http://www.google.com/patents/US273950

http://www.google.com/patents/US53111

I have no idea if any of those patents were actually marketable, but at least he had patent rights to them.

Obviously, more research is needed.

I love those types of "wrenches" wt1. I haven't had much time to do any research on much of anything the last few weeks but I'll get around to it sometime next week I hope! Thank you VERY much! I really appreciate the links! I'll have to print out those patent diagrams and put them with the cover's history. Won't that look good! -Jeff
