Poll Question:
How often do you purchase or receive a new catalog(s)? This could be a new-to-you copy, not necessarily the latest edition or this could be one that was given to you.

It depends, I guess I average every 5 years or so, but since I don't care about value and my U.S. collection stopped in 1993, there's really no need to get a new album every year because in my area of collecting interest, nothing ever changes.

Hi

I voted every year even though I do not order full catalog volumes. I collect only 3 countries so I order a Scott catalog country section for Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela every year from:

I buy new catalogs that are a few years old as well as used ones sometimes when I cannot find new ones. I never buy the newest one when it is first issued since it costs the most at this time. This is mostly because the Canada specialized catalog that I am interested in is printed every year. Also, I only collect old issues and not new issues so that I am not interested in the added new stamps.

I usually purchase a Scott US Specialty every 2 to 3 yrs. and sell my old one. However, I do purchase parts of the Scott catalogs every other year for Israel, United Nations, & Kosovo from a person who purchases whole catalogs and sells them by country which is really convenient. He usually keep 2 or 3 yrs of each Country until the are sold. Over the years I have found him a great person to deal with

Hi ACANALIZO

Rick and Karen are really nice people to deal with. I have been buying from them since they started on ebay.

Years ago there was a dealer in upstate New York who did the same thing. When he passed away that option was gone for a number of years. Then came Chirokmd.

How they split the catalog so neatly has to be an art.

Scott US Specialized 2010 is a great issue. I just replacd mine in December with 2014 Specialized which is really nice - keep an eye on that one in 3 or 4 years.

Because I mostly collect US Issues I try to pick-up the USPS Annual Guide about every 5-years. Since I am looking for a guideline for value this will work out fine. However, I did manage to get a 2010 Scott #1 and a 2010 Scott Specialized in 2011 for a better than 50% discount off Ames Publishing price and last year was able to get Scott's 2011 volume 2-6 @ a stamp show for <$100. I will be looking to acquire a Scott's Classical soon to get some additional information on my pre-1940 items. (I have a 1963 Scott's Volume I & II [I think that's all there were]and sometime compare).

I recently picked up a 2003 Scott's Classic Specialized for $25 to supplement my original Scott's 1940 edition (paid maybe $5 for?), which I've had for 20 years. Bought a used 2011 US Specialized even though my interests, like many of you, don't really extend beyond 1945 or so... Dumb question, does the Scott US Specialized edition come available in a hardback binding? The Classic is quite a classy production, I'd pay the extra to have something similar for the US copy.

I voted every five years. Could be four, could be six, just kind of depends. I also tend to use a set that is five or six years old, as I can get that affordably and am interested in identification rather than value.

Every 5 years would seem to fit. I'm not a dealer so I don't need up to the minute pricing and the values haven't seen a dramatic reduction or increase since my catalogs (Scott 2009) were issued.

Buy a new set every other year with a new Classic each year about $125.00 for the classic and $600.00 every other year .

Well, I just got my first ever set of (2013) Scott Catalogues about 3 months ago, and of course have yet to replace them, but I voted for every 3 years. That's about how often I figure I'll upgrade, unless I find a really good deal or something. Most of the stamps I collect aren't going to change in value all that much over that time, and catalog value to me is just one reference point. For recent stamps, I can use the library's current copy if necessary, or just view the updates in Linn's.

Sort of new in to the serious part of the hobby so I have been slowly purchasing older library copies of the Scott Catalog. For the US I have the USPS Guide to US Stamps that is about 4 years old and in need of an update.
