Gilles: go to Google Maps. You will find it where the Canard River empties into the Detroit River (Riviere-aux-Canards). Lots of French history in this area related to French settlements that extended up the Lake Huron shore. Typically they were at the mouths of the major rivers (e.g., Goderich at the mouth of the Maitland River; Southampton at the mouth of the Saugeen, etc. The French history related to these places predates the influx of English, Irish, Scot and German settlers in the 1840's.
Gilles-- I almost fell over when I seen the heading. I grew up and still live just a few miles for River Cnard (Duck River) . I moved there in 1975 and honestly can not think of where the actual post office would have been but there really could only have been a couple options. If you google St. Josephs Church River Canard you will usually see an arch bridge that crosses the river and leads right to the church. On the opposite side of the bridge was a variety store that would have been the postal outlet of the time. Prior to that there was a hotel called "The halfway house" and I believe the post office was there for the early years until 1912 and then moved to the variety store-- The hotel later burned to the ground. The hotel was named halfway because it was located halfway between Windsor and Amherstburg. River Canard was located in Sandwich West Township and is now split between the town of LaSalle and Amherstburg with the river a makeshift divider. I'd love to have that one if you ever care to sell or trade or come across another.
