Hi,
I picked up a collection at auction and it included a few stamps whose country of origin I cannot identify.

They appear to be tax stamps or the like, and the thing they have in common is the word "tempelmark". Does anyone know what that means, or where the stamps may have come from?

Thank you,
Mobilman44

A quick google search shows Tempelmark to be Estonian. Can you possibly scan and post the stamps?

Unfortunately, my old HP printer/scanner is not compatible with the PCs new operating system so I can't scan (GOT to get a new printer).

The stamps are "vertical commemorative" size, with the bottom quarter fairly bare, and the top has a shield like picture space with a tree (1) or castle (5), or cross/coat of arms (10).

While its very possible they are from Estonia, I can't locate them in Scotts catalogue or Big Blue.

I believe that you will find that tempelmark is a variation (possibly Estonian) of the German stempelmarke which means revenue stamp. Of course, foreign revenue stamps are not found in Scott catalogs. You would need to find a specialty catalog.

Thank you! The collection was very heavy on German stamps - old and new.

My old HP scanner has software that does not find Win XP a compatible operating system. but I only have to locate the corre ct folder and program on the installation CD and then use the right-click Open or Explore command and I can copy it to my computer or use it. I think copying works better.

Searching Google Images for words sometimes returns pleasing results also.

Google Images search returns images such as those you describe. A tree, coat of arms and a somewhat religious picture when 'temelmark' is searched for. The links are of Estonian , 'ee' country two-letter origin.

Hi,
Thanks for the words on the scanner connection. Unfortunately, I've tried the proper HP fix and it won't take to Windows 7. Ha, my oldest is with Microsoft and his advice - "get a 21st century printer".........

I've used the various search engines a great deal, but never thought of looking up stamps there. I'd rather talk to you guys, but I will attempt elsewhere first, the next time around.
