Since it's Ash Wednesday today, the question just occurred to me:
Are there any stamps that depict Ash Wednesday?

Yes, I've run across them. One that comes to mind is Surinam. I'll see if I can pilfer a picture.

My Google search apparently says NO. Then again, we all have our own version of Google results. You know that. khj is right. There is at least this, a semi-postal from Surinam: "Country:Suriname Series:Easter charities Catalog codes:NVPH SR 490 Michel SR 533 Themes:Easter Issued on:1968-03-27 Format:Stamp Emission:Semi-postals Perforation:comb 12˝ x 13 Printing:Offset Face value:10+5 Surinamese cent" In general, if you want a stamp with a certain subject/theme, and there IS such a stamp, fine! You got what you want. What if there ISN'T? You can always create a personalized stamp about it (over 60 countries offer that option). Or, you can always wait patiently for a national postal administration to issue a regular stamp, if at all. |

Yes, DC3, that's the set! Here it is, showing the sequence of events. The Ash Wednesday stamp, of course, is the leftmost stamp. k |

Thanks to you both, DC3 and Khj! Very impressive to have tracked that down so quickly! (I would never have guessed Surinam.)
I had tried a Google search before asking, and didn't come up with anything meaningful, so I thought I would turn to the knowledgeable folks here.
I should probably try to find a pretty complete Vatican City collection presented online, and check those stamps as well. It seems like it would make sense there.
If anyone else uncovers any, please continue to post them here.
Thanks to all!

I did a quick skim through, but didn't see any Ash Wednesday topical. Feel free to check -- I've been wrong before. It may also be hidden in the background of one of the stamps (i.e., not main theme of stamp). If you want a real challenge, try to get a complete postally used Vatican City collection!! k |

Even that Surinam stamp--would you have known it's about Ash Wednesday, if it weren't for those words, in Dutch?
How about a stamp that shows an image directly related to Ash Wednesday, such as a forefront with the ash smear, or so? A personalized stamp can be done, if all else fails. |

Don' think so unless it is a Zazzle.com type custom stamp. Closest you will come to a stamp is an Easter stamp. |

Klaus: Thanks very much for checking the online Michel resource. What a good idea! DC3: I know, I was thinking that there would be a stamp that illustrated the imposition of ashes. The Surinam stamp depicts that indirectly, in my view. Since the ashes on the forehead is a visually striking image, and a unique religious observance, I figured it would be a more likely subject for a stamp that it apparently is (at least for what we've uncovered so far), for countries who issue stamps for explicitly Christian religious subjects. KHJ: I haven't had a chance to go through this carefully, but here's one person's online collection for Vatican City: http://mitch.seymourfamily.com/mwar...vatican.htmlAnd I know there's another online collection which I can't find the link to anymore. I think it was a doctor in Taiwan? -- Dave |
