As a flipside to the hard-to-find-low-catalog thread, what easy to find, high catalog stamps come to mind? Of course, most stamps except true rarities can be found rather easily (leaving the cost aside for the moment), and of course the idea of "high catalog" varies from one person to another.

So, along those lines....are there stamps that catalog at relatively high prices (again, whatever you think is high is OK) that you keep running across again and again, and wonder how in the heck it's valued so high?

The 1936 10 Schilling 'Dullfuss' stamp from Austria (Michel 588). It was printed in 100000 copies, but catalog value is 1400 Euro (Michel 2001)

If you compare it to Michel 612, the closest stamp of the same denomination (10 Shilling), its catalog value is 10 times as high, same number issued (105000 vs 100000).

There are two unissued stamps of Cochin, which are mentioned and priced in footnotes in Gibbons.

I have this one, the Fifth Raja 1 Anna 3 Pies:

It's currently priced at £225, but it can be found for considerably less than that. This, believe it or not, is uncommon for Cochin. Difficult stamps in this sort of price range will usually sell for up to 100% or more of catalogue value, provided they're in good condition.

Incidentally, for the catalogue cynics who believe catalogue prices never go down, this stamp was first listed in the 1998 Gibbons - at £325.

A bakers dozen would get you either:

One Anna One Pie

or Four Paise One Pie.

Sometimes one can find many copies listed at once for sale on ebay of a more expensive stamp or variety since most find the price either too high or it is not part of their collecting interest. An example is Canada # 192i broken "E" variety.

I got a MNH Dolfuss ,sure the $50.00 for shipping sounds fine to me ,I purchased it at Cherrystone Auctions for $400.00 and will sell it for $550.00 ,think it now catalogs around $1300.00.Do you want the Renner sheets or the WIPA sheet .Those common high price stamps are seen in many stamp auctions regularly because they have a large following by collectors and are easy sells for the firm . The Basel Dove comes up for auction every year because for advance collectors its one of the gold standards like the U.S.Zepplins or Canadian Jubilee sets .

Meh.. Supply and Demand.

Zeppelins come to mind. So do dollar value Columbians and Trans-Mississippis.

Lower on the cat value scale, I'd put most used stamps of Germany, circa 1945-55. The used stamps are more often than not higher in cat value than the unused version, but on ebay and in mixtures that I buy, the used ones seem to be offered for sale much more frequently.

The Penny Black is probably the easiest to find high value stamp e.g overpriced.
I agree with billw2 - Supply and demand.
