I've got the catalogue for this auction, beautiful stuff as usual. One day I'd like to experience one, but not this month.

James, I went to the June one last year.

I only bid one time but as I expected did not get the item.

It was quite an experience for sure.

There were maybe four or five bidders there with deep pockets
which kind of made me feel like what the heck am I doing here.

But I'm going again and this time who knows.
I told the wife I'm going to spent at least around a grand (not)
and all I got was this strange look.

How many usually go in person? I always wondered if there is any hope of getting anything if there are people physically there. I also subscribe to the catalogues and so much looks nice. One day.

Vance Auctions, is one of the deep pocket buyers at this auction. Everything in Vance's Auctions are company owned. So everything has a reserve. That is why they don't publish a prices realized list. Maresch is all unreserved. Vance buys here and then breaks it down and re-sells it.

Thanks for this info. I have always been frustrated as to why I have to wait a week for Vance to let me know if any of my bids actually win.
I have bid on his stuff on SAN and had it show I was the high bidder, then a week later they say I was tied or outbid by someone else.

BUT. I bought the exact stamp from a contact three weeks after he said I was outbid. The guy I bought it from said he paid less than my bid but won the auction. WEIRD. I really think these things are manipulated and are NOT transparent. I ended up getting the stamp for my original bid price. The seller made a few bucks.

I don't understand why these auctions can't give results in real time.
I also did not know that they had a reserve until reading this thread.

Heck, I have bought homes and collector cars at auction for much higher prices and I always know instantly if I won or lost on the spot. Funny, you can call for bid updates right up till they close but then they take a week to let you know the result.
I guess they are deciding if they really want to sell the stamp or not. Should not be allowed without disclosure.

Thanks for opening my eyes.

Haven't been to their auction but have sold lots through them. They are high profile and a major mover IMHO. I was there a few days before one of their auctions and the load was impressive to see. Several potential buyers studiously going through stuff. Some of the lots were many many boxes. A philatelist's dream. But only if you take the time to go through it. O/W could be a nightmare.

I have 20 lots in this weeks auction at Maresch. I have found them very professional and honest. The No Reserve listings attract many bidders.

My experience when listing items at prior auctions with Maresch is that they have obtained higher bid prices for my items that are on my website listed at a fixed sales price with no commissions! Go figure.

@ stamporator, are you saying that pros like Vance Auctions
are bidding higher for stuff than could be had cheaper on ebay?

Why would anybody bid in Maresch Auctions then, where you have to pay
15% buyer's premium and Ontario's 15%HST? It's only 13%,
guess it was just a premonition of what it will be after the next election.

One thing I do like about a live auction is the fact
that I get the item then and there as soon as I pay for it.

Vance buys up large lots and breaks them down. As for the GST, it becomes a tax credit, because he re-sells the items. We end up paying the GST, when we buy the stamps.

Wow you have some pretty impressive items there, stamporator.

I really like the Bluenose and Parliament imperf pairs.

I bet you will get cat or even above.

Good luck.
