Just wondering before I end up making one. Just looking for a simple one that lists all the Scott #s and a few spaces for used / unused / mint check boxes.

Thanks and if there's any interest, if there isn't one around already, I'll be sure to post mine when I make one.

Mike33: I have a spread sheet but does not list Scott# you would need to input. I was going to email you but couldn't attach the sheet. Drop a line to me & I'll send it along via reply email??

Thanks eligies but I started one last night and got up to 1939 this afternoon which is about probably where I'm going to stop.

If you want one with #s. let me know. I think it came out pretty decent and could use some proof readers anyway

Mike

Thanks for the offer, but no need. I created mine with numerous tabs for issue periods from Scott #1 thru today. Inputting the Scott# helps me do some research and allows me to 'insert' expensive varieties acquired at shows later. I also have a simple color coding for condition so I can easily pick an issue needing to be upgraded. When I first started I printed a copy and the 'package' was 1" thick. Good luck

Wouldn't it be nice if Scott had an option to export listings to Excel? I collect Germany and I decided I needed to create an Excel inventory/checklist. Took me a good chunk of the weekend just to input the data, and that was just the Scott# and values, both used and mint. And I still have quite a bit left to enter at some point, such as occupations, colonies, foreign offices, etc.

I'd have glady paid for a downloadable spreadsheet, assuming it wouldn't be locked and I could edit, copy & paste, etc. You'd think that would be just about the simplest thing for them to do and I can't be the only one who would be willing to pay something for it. I'd have rather spent that time working on actual stamps, but I was at the point where I really needed to come up with a comprehensive inventory in case something happens to my collection and I need to replace it, file an insurance claim, etc.

I have all US stamps in a SQL database including Scott numbers. It would take only a few seconds to export to just about any other format including XLS or CSV. But Amos rightfully prohibits distributing this data in this fashion. The catalog numbers (and values) are their property (both copyrighted and trademarked) and while we are all allowed to use them in a limited way we should not be passing around spreadsheets with them in it unless you get Amos permission.

Good point Don - thanks

Wasn't thinking about copyright issues

Mine's just a checklist though (no values) - so I can keep track of what has no gum, regummed or MNH without having to look at the backs

StampManage can be used free for 30 days on a trial basis. You can make as many collections as you want and print it.

This is where Amos is falling behind. A future version of the Scott Catalog app was supposed to allow you to catalog your collection. They never delivered on that promise.

If I were a dealer, I'd be clamoring hard for spreadsheet versions of Scott Catalogues. What easier way to tally up the catalog value of a collection or a group of stamps?

I have been using Stamp Collector's Database software for years for my US, UN & Israel collections and it works very well and worth the money. They have several other countries also.

Mike, I wouldn't mind a copy of the spreadsheet, if it is still available. I want to start work on my American collection and this would help with my organization.

I used to use the LibertyStreet programs but when I switched to Mac, they would not work. I wish there was a company that had a native mac version of hteir stamp collecting program.

I downloaded a trial of StampManage last night. Haven't had time to try it out yet, but it looks like it might be what I'm looking for.

Just a general note….
Most folks know that applications like StampManage uses Scott numbers because they pay Amos a licensing fee. But a user can quickly export data out of a app like StampManage into a format like an Excel spreadsheet. If you are doing this for yourself it is certainly within your rights to do it since it can be classified as personal use.

Ditto if someone wanted to simply manually enter Scott numbers into a spreadsheet or other database. And of course Amos allows using a Scott number in an ad or other communications (like this forum) as long as it does not come close to being a comprehensive listing of all numbers.

The rub come when folks start talking about sending or distributing a comprehensive listing to other people. Scott number are not merely copyrighted, they are trademarked. Distributing a comprehensive listing to others is seen as a competitive threat to Amos and they will protect their intellectual properties. They have spent a lot of money over the years developing and promoting their product and certainly don't want others to gain without having some sort of licensing in place with them.

So sending an Excel spreadsheet that contains any kind of comprehensive listing of Scott numbers is not only against the law but is also not very ethical.

I agree, Don. Like it or not, Scott/Amos is crucial to the hobby in this country, and we shouldn't begrudge them their due (financial or otherwise) when it comes to their trademarks and copyrights. Scott is far from a perfect catalog (at least when it comes to WW stamps), but I can't imagine the hobby without them.
