My local PO has installed new blue "green" waste containers in the lobby. These are to throw away your paper mail items in. They are locked containers! Is this the end of dumpster diving for stamps? Bummer, we stamp collectors just can't catch a break anymore.......

Unfortunately, with security and ID theft being a major concern, to put out in the public a trash can with free access to anyone increases the problem, thus "locked" containers are now often used.

Although it may be a disappointment to collectors, it's a legitimate concern these days.

I can sympathize with you PoStat.

In the good old days when I was in my late teens, I could dive into these dumpsters and retrieve postal cards that were left in mail boxes for a variety of reasons like, reminders that you have an Eaton's or Sears catalogue awaiting you in the PO., flyers and other items.

Some of those items today have a CV of $30.00 + and - !

I can also understand the PO's reasoning here too. But, like everything else in life, for a few 'baddies' that would take advantage of something like this, the good ones have to pay the price.

The post offices around here have been using these for a few years. What seems to happen is that some recycling containers have the locked lids and some don't. I'm not sure if that was intentional, or just some lids got lost over the years. (This is in addition to still having a traditional trash can around.) Some people still drop their discarded mail in the open ones, so perhaps all is not lost.

Good on all of you, lads & lasses.

I would hate to see the looks on peoples' faces as I dived into a post office trashcan, in this decade or any other, knowing that they tossed their trash thinking that it would stay tossed.

I just ain't got the courage.

OTOH, I might just have the courage to walk around back, and make off with the trash bags ;)

Cheers,
