Hi. Does anyone know when the next BNAPS BNA Topics will be out? Also, what has happened to BNAPortraitS? Thanks.

First Quarter of 2014 is out. (Volume 71, Number 1)

I recommend the article by Mr Vasseur and also Mr Dyer's piece on 1929 surcharges.

My hard copy was printed inverted on the cover--so I'm keeping it safe and starting a new community website on collectibility of philatelic material. Who knows at $8.95, these might be worth triple that in 100 years?

CanadaStamp is correct. Portraits was the more Society-centric publication and Topics was the philatelic journal. If I remember correctly, Portraits ceased publication in favour of significant printing and postage savings to BNAPS and the previous Portraits content was continued in the business end of Topics (i.e. the back pages) and the BNAPS website at www.bnaps.org which continues to evolve to meet the needs and requests of members and other viewers who engage with those of us who volunteer to make it better for more BNA collectors.

If I am reading all of the above correctly, the second quarter BNA Topics has not come out yet for this year.

We are a silly bunch, not answering your direct question, jogil! Q2 is at the printer or well on its way. I co-wrote a section and it's been in the can for a few weeks already.

Hi Peter. Do you report on what the different BNAPS BNA study groups do? Also, how long does it take around from the time that an article is submitted until it is published in BNA Topics? Thanks.

Wert--slightly off this threads topic, but

Yes, I only collect Newfoundland. Bit of fanatic in that I purge anything else--just Newfoundland since 1968. My goal is to have the largest, broadest collection of stamps and covers. Long way to go--but I'm doing good and not too constrained financially.

Yes, I am seriously contemplating creating and funding a new website which I am incubating. Namely -- a web based digital archive of every Newfoundland cover out there. I got to thinking about this when I recently bought the book on Pence Issues, and was blown away by the back which details the life of each individual pence cover (date and to and from and who has owned them). It is a book though and not dynamic, and lacks photos. So I thought, why not create a place where each individual owner of a cover could upload and post it for free?

Part sharing. Part community. Part digital archive for the future. Part safe on the cloud for all time. Part research. Think like the famous library in Alexandra but 21st century. Or the place in Iceland that is storing every single seed. Or the human genome project. Just covers initially, and probably sortable by Stamp Catalog number and by date chronological.

Just thinking out loud, but Id be curious if BNAPS members or others might find this compelling or stupid. Shall I create a new thread?

Hi jogil,

No, I don't report on the activities of the Study Groups. That's achieved through their own newsletters to members and then the Centreline Reporter (now Peter McCarthy) does an effective round-up of each publication in Topics.

I'm not on the publications committee of BNAPS, nor an editor of Topics, but the reality is that some articles are submitted ready-to-publish and that coincides with a need for specific content on the publishing continuum. There is always an arc to these things, with some issues planned, perhaps a year or two in advance, to focus on a specific subject. There is also a need to find some level of balance between the various areas of collecting and the often-debated subject of stamps vs. postal history vs. other interests. Some authors need a lot of help in turning their ideas and content into a publishable article. The simple reality in all similar publications is that there is no consistent answer to your question.

One thing IS certain - if you want to see something specific, start writing it or be sure to encourage one of your collector friends to start an article. This hobby will always need writers at all levels of expertise, opinion and experience. It's how we teach one another, share our joy of collecting and our enthusiasm for our own niche areas of interest.

Well, that was too long. Hope I was helpful.

Peter

tommy,

That sounds like a very interesting project. Please send me an email and I will get you into contact with the chair of the BNAPS Newfoundland Study Group, which counts the leading collectors of Nfld in the world amongst its membership. Including the founder/editor of the Newfoundland Specialized Catalogue.

Petermac,

Would that be Mr Dyer? I'm in the Newfoundland Study Group (new member) and know a few of them.

I'm still ruminating and deliberating on my concept. I feel that there is something there. But I need time before formally or informally doing this. One thing is the cost, which I need to pencil out and seed myself or finance; I'd like to make it free and ultra modern--web and cloud based.

Leave it with me, but happy to have your contact email when I unveil the proposal

tommy, you can contact SCF members by clicking on their board names. They get a message to their recorded email.

Please do speak with Bob Dyer about this. Perhaps you don't know that BNAPS is happy to provide Study Groups with web space on the main BNAPS site for such projects.

These things make me happy.
