Good Morning,
Maybe because its Easter Sunday, I'm having good thoughts I would like to share..........

Isn't it nice when .........
- that recently won album had stamps attached with easily peelable hinges?
- that country lot you bought, sight unseen, has several stamps that you needed?
- that group of album page auctions you have been eyeballing seems to have gone unnoticed by others?
- those "out of production" album pages you have been searching for suddenly appear on ebay at a reasonable price?
- a fellow collector from the other side of the world takes you up on an offer to trade duplicates, and the result is extremely rewarding?
- you find a stamp collecting Forum that helps you through those difficult first few years of the hobby?

Well, the above isn't just wishful thinking - for it all has happened to me. But I'm sure you all have your own examples to add.

ENJOY the day!

Just to broaden everyone's horizons a little bit, there's more than one Easter. While the Americans seem to have settled on a single date, if you live where the religions are proximate and stubborn, you soon learn that the Armenians and Copts and Orthodoxes (etc) all keep their own calendars and, yes, some years, there might be four or five Easter parades, not one of which share the same Sunday.

That having been said, there's only one SCF.

Many happy returns of the day, bunny-spotters.

Cheers,

And here in GB Easter is a movable feast where the date changes from year to year.

Happy Easter all.

Easter in the US is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox - i.e. it's always shortly after the first full moon in spring, so will always fall roughly between about March 22 or 23 and about April 23-24 or so.

So that is why Easter moves. It follows the old Lunar calendar, not the Julian calendar. Neat.

Yes, Easter is a holiday co-opted from the pagans (whose holiday was Eoster), hence the vernal equinox reference, full moon and rabbits (the rabbit being the symbol of a major pagan goddess celebrated on Eoster).

Gosh, where would this thread be going if I hadn't off-handedly mentioned "Easter Sunday"?

We'd be chatting along the lines of:

"Isn't it nice when your daughter is invited by the PRC to continue her study of Chinese, for a full academic year, on *their* dime?"

Honorable mentions include:

"Isn't it nice when there's a thread at SCF to which you can contribute?"

"Isn't it nice when the morning begins with a new postcard coming or going on PostXing?"

Cheers,

Like many of the Christian holidays, the Holidays and their timings were modified, renamed and repurposed from Pagen holidays.

In general, lunar calendars preceded solar calendars because they are easier to keep, whereas solar calendars superceded lunar calendars because they are more reliable to plant by.

I am not certain what would be necessarily pagan about keeping a holiday based on either the solar calendar, the lunar calendar, or both.

To carry that a step further, having one foot in the solar calendar and one foot in the lunar calendar strikes me as the sort of culture-blending that we often see in the religion that keeps Easter.

Cheers,

A bit like the Romans adopting the Gods of conquered nations into their own Pantheon. Smart move-keeps everyone happy.
