A nice human interest story published this past week about a 98 year old that still collects stamps:

I hope to enjoy philately long into my retirement years!

Just a random comment/question - Who's the oldest collector you know?

We have a collector in my club (Oregon Stamp Society) who is in his 90s (I only know him as "Chris") and spends time between Portland and Maryland. He is a WWII vet who served in the Air Force. I wish I could sit down and talk with him!

Brian

During WWII we did not have an Air Force. We had the Army Air Corps. My Dad was a member he served on Iwo Jima, Pearl Harbor, and other places in the Pacific.

We had a member in the collectors club that was 97 years old. I know of two gentlemen,(and they are true gentlemen) in the Maplewood stamp club that turn 90 this year. The absolute best part of being in a stamp club is the socializing with people from all age groups and all walks of life both men and women that I probably would never meet on equal ground in any other setting.
Oh, and Rileysan I did not mean to nitpick your post. I see people doing that a lot on this board and I don't like it. When it comes to serving our country it is important to me that I pay the proper respect to the people that risked their life for my freedom. My Dad was involved in some horrible battles and all the years growing up he would never talk about it. In the last 10 years or so of his life he shared a little. Although he was never physically harmed it was obvious that his sole was badly damaged. One of the few things he told me was that when he was on Iwo Jima he had 7 of the best friends that anyone could ever hope for and my Dad was the only one of that group that survived. I guess I'm glad he didn't tell me more.
