It's really more of an advertising cover than a true patriotic cover since the company is trying to sell books about the Civil War. The condition is rough, but the subject matter is highly desirable and having the advertising inserts is a strong plus. As for value, it's hard to say unless you can find a similar item to compare it to. |

Although I'm not an expert this field, I would consider the cover scanned to have value not only as a Civil War advertising piece, but for the oval Springfield, Mass. postmark. I think that may be collectible in and of itself. If you're interested about the addressee of the cover, William H. Neff, Civil War Veteran, here's a small piece about him. It seems he was the Founder of a Funeral Home in Howard, Pennsylvania for most of his life -- in fact, I found this brief sketch on the Neff Funeral Home website -- which is still in operation today by the 5th generation of the Neff family! |

truly a beautiful historic letter to the Neff family. If I remember correctly the content of the letter was addressed to the veteran to tell his imprisonment during the war and then published in the book |

Howard Pa. is in my neck of the wood. I went to school with some Neff's and Thompson's and they are some very prominent names out that way. Neat cover and curious postmark! Great find! |

I_L_S: You may be interested to know that in researching the addressee, William H. Neff, he was first married in 1852 to his first wife, Sarah E. Harlen, who was actually from Jersey Shore, PA. They had six (6) children. She died about 10 years after they were married on March 14, 1863.
Mr. Neff eventually remarried on November 22, 1865 to Margaret A. Thompson of the Howard, PA area. They had five (5) children.

good morning
incredible to be able to trace the genealogy of his ancestors, in Italy it is difficult to go back to their descendants. I wanted to ask if you can get information on how to delete sprinfilde mass because I have done some research but have not found anything. regards Simon |

I agree that it is an advertising cover for books and not really a patriotic cover. It is post-war since there is reference to the rebellion of 61-65 and there would be no way during the war to know when it would have ended. The condition is terrible. Taking all of this into account I would think that the philatelic value would be minimal but the fun value of being able to read about the book he was hawking would be high. |
