Hi,
It is getting to be a regular thing here, that being new members posting about inherited collections. Most just don't have a clue as to worth or what to do about them.

I suggest a thread be put together where we can record our "newbie recommendations" for the new collector or new owner of a collection.

Then, when a post about the subject is made, the OP could be directed to the "newbie guide".

For what its worth...............

Sort of a FAQ section. It could be divided into sections and be chock full of advice for new members, new collectors and I just inherited. New tools for the trade. There are others that other members will think of where my mind is a blank right now.

I remember a few years ago here on SCF where there was a thread or Forum Section that asked for suggestions and Ideas. A deadline was given for members to post their ideas and then the Mods got together and sorted the ideas out to use what they felt was useful or not. That allowed for good clear wording and a way to sort the duplicate ideas out.

I wonder if it might be better to prepare a tutorial on how to search for information as opposed to repeating what has been already published on the internet? For example, if you type "i inherited a stamp collection" into a search engine like Google it will return over 88,000 results. On the first page returned many great links pop up including both commercial and non-profit groups. Same with those folks trying to determine value; teaching them how to properly search the online auction sites would be good advice.

To paraphrase...Give a man a stamp answer and you appease him for a day. Teach a man to find his own stamp answers and you might make him a hobbyist for a lifetime!
