Some of us er adults remember when there a number of stamp magazines ..actually Stamps and Stamp Collector demised rather recently...Linns still exists a shadow of what it once was..it used to boast of 95,000 circulation on the front page and had twice as many pages as it does now..its lucky if it has 40,000 subscribers now. I dont subscribe to it any more..theres not that much in it for me and I pick up a couple of week or two week old Linns at the stamp club...theres still 5 or 6 members who get it...i guess if you got 3 different stamp magazines a month they were a bit repetitive..but its an era thats come and gone..no doubt the internet hurt the magazine trade in general..

It's not just that the internet has hurt the magazine trade, it's that there are fewer collectors than there used to be.
Kids these days have so many choices for how to spend their leisure time. They no longer have to "make their own fun" like they used to, because of the internet and Nintendo, neither of which really require a lot of brains to get involved with, and that's probably the saddest aspect of it -- kids don't really have to think anymore, and they don't. School has been dumbed down to such a level that there is no incentive for a kid to learn on his own, and hobbies like stamp collecting (which I always saw as a hobby that could teach you things) have fallen by the wayside in favour of pastimes that entertain them. |

A lot of magazines, newspapers, and periodicals are available in an online digitized format now to help retain some readers and hopefully bring in new readers that prefer paperless media. I know Linn's offers an online subscription, some society's send out an internet newsletter via email, even the USPS has started an email newsletter for their online shop, the Postal Musuem sends out a monthly email regarding what's happening there, and the APS does as well.
I usually prefer paper. Old habits of flipping through articles leisurely are hard to break. However, I also like the email info I receive that I can scan quickly. |

Hi All
I used to subscribe to Linns but gave up the subscription only about 4 years ago. My main reason was not because of the content, but because of the cost to have it mailed here to Canada. I was quoted just a couple of dollars short of $100.00 to have it sent here. That alone could buy me more stamps / covers / postcards, so I dropped it on purely budget reasons alone.
However; having stated this, I still subscribe to the Scott's Monthly and since last year can get online access to the Linns as well for free by doing so. I have heard that the same is true if you are already a subscriber to Linns, then you get the Scotts added free as well.
My only other subscription is to the Canadian Stamp News which also has WW coverage. I think My Scotts runs out in 2012 and my CSN in 2014.

You get access to ALL of Amos' online publications as well as the US value supplement. A very good deal for $10 a year, or whatever the current subscription cost is. The only drawback is that I rarely read it anymore. The interface has improved greatly over the initial one a few years back. The grab and move type interface they've implemented is a lot better than the cumbersome scrollbars. |

I switched this year to the digital only format of Linn's. I read the most recent issue last night. |

It is amazing how much history and geography I learned as a kid from stamp collecting. As a former high school teacher, it was so sad that the students I taught knew so little of the world in which they lived. (How's that for a school teacher's grammar?)

Humpy You remind me of Churchill's famous quote1 about ending sentences with prepositions: Quote: "that is one thing up with which I will not put" |
