My reading of the article is that PayPal and ebay have separate systems. Therefore, if you use the same password for both, you should change both. However, if your ebay password is different, then only that one needs to be changed.

I agree. There's no need to change your PayPal password... yet. Mind you, the ebay hack seems like it is a really big one and you definitely need to change your password. I've personally never trusted ebay (for a number of either right or wrong reasons) but hacking was not among the reasons. I hope that none of the forum members have their personal data compromised.

Serious by the sound of it, so why has ebay not contacted each of us and told us that we should change our passwords?

To me it looks like a mass sale of email address!

I have had 2 very good looking paypal scam emails as well!

They would of hit me by now if they had the right info!

ebay has told me that there system has been hacked.

Don't bet on it. There are websites where criminals can go that have millions of pieces of personal information on them for anyone to reach out there and randomly grab. You could get hit now, weeks from now or a year from now, if the current info isn't changed.

Original ebay site warning:

eBay Inc. To Ask ebay Users To Change Passwords

Earlier today ebay Inc. announced it is aware of unauthorized access to ebay systems that may have exposed some customer information.

There is no evidence that financial data was compromised and there is no evidence that PayPal or our customers have been affected by the unauthorized access to ebay systems.

We are working with law enforcement and leading security experts to aggressively investigate the matter.

As a precaution, we will be asking all ebay users (both buyers and sellers) to change their passwords later today.

As a global marketplace, nothing is more important to ebay than the security and trust of our customers. We regret any inconvenience or concern that this situation may cause you. We know our customers and partners have high expectations of us, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and secure online experience for you on any connected device.

We are asking all ebay customers to change their password the next time they log into their ebay account.

We are making this decision out of an abundance of caution.

Below are additional steps we are taking:
As always, we have strong protections in place for both buyers and sellers in the event of any unauthorized activity on your account.

We are applying additional security to protect our customers.

We are working with law enforcement and leading security experts to aggressively investigate the matter.

How are you notifying ebay customers of this incident?
We are in the process of notifying all ebay users and asking them to change their password through email, site and other marketing communications channels.

I have just changed my ebay password.

This is broadcast across all world-wide ebay sites. May take a day or so for all to update but your main sign-in site is the one that You need to change.

This will change the password across all the sites that you use with that user name.

PayPal is OK.

My stamp cancels are OK. My stamps are OK.

To change your password:

Go to your My ebay screen,

Look under the upper Account tab,

Click on Personal Information under that tab,

Next to Password click the Edit click-link at the side of the screen,

You will then have to sign in again or enter your ebay email,

You will receive an email that has a link but - - DO NOT CLICK ON IT,

Copy and Paste it into the URL area of a new window or tab on your browser and hit return or enter to Go to the newly entered site address,

Enter your new password,

You will then receive a confirmation email telling you that you have a new password entered.

Do not tell your stamp club what it is! Do not tell your dog, do not tell any other site, do not tell your dentist or doctor or veterinarian.

Happy eBaying!

Well then, don't shop anywhere or use any banks either. Don't trust the White House or the FBI either. Because they've ALL been hacked at some point.

I like ebay and Delcempe and other web sites to buy on, and I used to sell and still intend to. Friendly and improving sites.

It's good they told us all and it's good they are taking steps to make business more secure.

I am more secure on here than at some regular stores, at least I feel that sometimes.

I just spent 10 minutes trying to change my password to no avail. No matter what I put in, it kept on saying that blank spaces were not allowed in a password, even though I had no blank spaces. I used a password generator as well, set to no spaces, and it still gave me the same error message. I will try it again tomorrow.

Do you ever give your credit card to a waiter/waitress?

I gave-up faster than that; they must be swamped.

Your credit card is far more likely to be stolen in its physical form than it's online, virtual form.
