Regarding my comment about use of ebay; I read about, and hear about, far more problems in using that site for philatelic transactions than I hear praise. Sellers whose sites I've visited; for curiosity purposes and looking for certain somewhat specialized items; usually have fairly inflated prices. I get better deals; with the several auction houses, dealers, APS; that I patronize.

If you choose to believe that you are certainly entitled to. Personally, I would bet my last dollar that for every company that admits they've been hacked, there's 10 that don't, and likely another 10 that were hacked and still don't know it.

bobby: Very true. ebay's hack happened a few months ago and we're just hearing about it. Target was hacked last year along with a few other major retailers. My graduating university was hacked, a couple of former employers were hacked and my bank was hacked. Luckily, nothing ever happened to my info or funds as far as I know. If you haven't been hacked yet, give it time. It could be an utility of yours that gets hacked, Amazon, a game console, cell/smart phone or anything that has your personal info or account information.

As for ebay, you probably hear about more problems (despite the fact that most transactions are conducted flawlessly) because one - it's digital with digital communication that spreads far and wide quickly. It will be rare gossip to hear about the dealer who sold a fake to a buyer at a local show. Of course what you hear and read about problems is not data, just anecdotal stories. Second, scale. ebay as a whole is larger than most of all the other dealers, auction houses, APS and others put together hence the number of problems will be higher.

I learned a painful lesson early this morning when I discovered I hadn't won on any of my esnipe bids last night on ebay, even when I knew that my bids where higher than the final realization.

If you reset your ebay password, make sure you update your esnipe account or your bids will not get placed!

The biggest faults, mistakes that happens on ebay for me, on their site is I do not list something or I make a mistake when I am listing or the people who do not pay.

spam attacks from email misuse is our biggest issue on line in my opinion!

Thanks for the warning! I'm sure I would eventually have been reminded of this fact ... in much the same way as you were.

ebay email I received today, reporting what we have already talked about.

Quote:

IMPORTANT: PASSWORD UPDATE

Dear ebay Member,

To help ensure customers' trust and security on ebay, I am asking all ebay users to change their passwords.

Here's why: Recently, our company discovered a cyberattack on our corporate information network. This attack compromised a database containing ebay user passwords.

What's important for you to know: We have no evidence that your financial information was accessed or compromised. And your password was encrypted.

What I ask of you:
Go to ebay and change your password. If you changed your password on May 21 or later, we do not need you to take any additional action at this time.

Changing your password may be inconvenient. I realize that. We are doing everything we can to protect your data and changing your password is an extra precautionary step, in addition to the other security measures we have in place.

If you have only visited ebay as a guest user, we do not have a password on file.

If you used the same ebay password on any other site, I encourage you to change your password on those sites too. And if you are a PayPal user, we have no evidence that this attack affected your PayPal account or any PayPal financial information, which is encrypted and stored on a separate secure network.

Here are other steps we are taking:

As always, we have strong protections in place for both buyers and sellers in the event of any unauthorized activity on your account.
We are applying additional security to protect our customers.
We are working with law enforcement and leading security experts to aggressively investigate the matter.

Here's what we know: This attack occurred between late February and early March and resulted in unauthorized access to a database of ebay users that includes customers' name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth.

However, the file did not contain financial information. And, after conducting extensive testing and analysis of our systems, we have no evidence that any customer financial or credit card information was involved. We also have no indication of a significant spike in fraudulent activity on our site.

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern that this situation may cause you. As a global marketplace, nothing is more important to ebay than the security and trust of our customers. We know our customers have high expectations of us, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and secure online experience for you on any connected device.

Esnipe????? Where's the fun in that???? Waiting until just seconds before times up to hit one click bid, only to find out that someone else bid higher in that crucial moment or that you weren't fast enough. :)
