I know a lot of people will read this and probably wonder "Why?" but I really would like to find the answer.

I like "grading" my stamps using the numerical system based on the centering of the stamp. I purchased EzGrader and it works well, but since I collect strictly used stamps, the program sometimes goes wonky on me and grades a stamp which should be 90, as 40 or 50 because the postmark interferes with the program as it was designed. I have written the publisher asking about this and requesting a fix which would allow for manual placement of the centering lines, but have heard nothing.

Now, I am trying to figure out just what formula is used to determine the numerical centering of a stamp. I would assume I measure the distance of the white space around each side of the stamp and use those measurements to make the determination. But I can't for the life of me figure out the formula to use.

Does anyone know the formula and know exactly how to make that determination?

Go to the PSE (professional stamp experts) site, they break down the criteria.

There is more to a stamp than margins. Unfortunately for those that need to know what there stamp grades, there is no "formula" for sorting out the great stamps from the ugly large-margined ones. PSE obviously hasn't figured it out.

Get this book...

This I think is the best solution for the problem you described.

I did not know this, but this grading and expertizing guide was updated (and much improved) in 2009. I can only find it as a PDF, here...
