I have a Scott album in a very nice brown binding. It is at least three inches thick and says "Scott" at the bottom of the spine, but with no title markings or labels at the top of the spine. The brown cover is slightly padded and has fancy gold (gilt?) leaves immediately after the boards. While I know the Scott International Albums were issued in brown bindings briefly, I don't know when, which is my basic question. This album is filled to capacity with Scott Specialty album pages for Austria from the beginning through 1998. It includes a title page for the Scott Specialty Album for "Central Europe" and a later title page for the Scott Specialty Album for Austria (and some regions, but not Hungary or Czechoslovakia). Were the Scott Specialty albums ever published in these brown bindings?

From Subway Stamp Shop... About the Scott "Browns" Internationals

Quote:
These fine albums were published in a series of 5 bound, brown editions. The present Int'l Vol. 1 (4 parts), formerly named the International Junior was a bound blue covered album, 1840-1940. In time the "Junior" title was dropped and the "blue" albums became the present day Int'l Series. Vintage Reproduction has reprinted these "Brown" Album pages on high quality 70-pound acid-free "archival quality'' paper on one side, with only one country per page and are cut and drilled to fit the "Blue" Int'l Binders. The pages are virtually complete for all Scott listed issues (except perf. varieties) thru 1940, and will interface with Vol. 2 (A&B) of the present International Series.

In short, according to Boulay's article, the "Browns" were published from the 1800's until 1938 [I question this date, since I have an International Junior that belonged to my father with a 1941 copyright on it], when the blue International Junior Album was renamed the Scott International Album and the former, more comprehensive "Brown" Scott Internationals gave way to the green Scott Specialty Series albums for a fuller collection.

Thank you "Modern Who", I really appreciate the info and links.

I currently have a Big Blue for the classic period, and 4 additional binders for 1940 thru 1960 by country. Attempting to integrate the Part 1 with succeeding parts just didn't work for me. So, I will make the best of my current system and move on.

All that being said, I sure wish I had a set of those "new Browns"!

Glad you found the info useful, Mobilman44. Yes, those new "Browns" look very nice.

Integrating Part I with the rest is tough; too many mismatches because they were produced differently.

My own integrated set goes to 1972 or so, but I broke it up in regions, separating out Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, Western Europe (further separated out to Britain and Colonies, France and Colonies, Germany with Scandinavia) etc. with some of this being moved into the larger Scott binders.

When combining the pages, I would have to choose where a page would go when two different countries were represented on either side. Every now and then I look to see if there is another old Part I that hasn't been used to fill out the missing pages in other areas, but they are harder to find, than they were 8 or 10 years ago.

These regional collections, however, are secondary collections, my main collection being a separate Part I from 1956 that I found being offered as "new old stock" some years back and is now housed in two binders, though I might just put it into one of the larger ones for easier use.

In 1973 I purchased a Scott "Brown" Specialty Album for Israel stamps
as soon as it came out.It was a hingless album with pre-attached Scott mounts on each page to hold stamps. Product was discontinued some years later.I remember a United States version was also issued before the Israel hingless came out. I stopped purchasing the hingless supplements because some of the stamps did not fit properly and preferred to purchase the regular supplements and cut and glue Scott mounts myself. The albums were issued with have a brown padded leather cover with gold foil inside and came with gold protector sheets and pages thru 1972. Also, a matching Brown leather with gold lining slipcase. The front page Scott title insert has a 1972 date but the Scott supplements for Israel did not come out until May or June of 1973 so it could not have been issued in 1972. Since then I was able to find 2 blank brown albums you are speaking about on ebay
to match the 1st album as years went by and supplements were added but you hardly every see them for sale.

I'm glad you posted, Albert, because I have an album for Japan that also fits the description of your Israel one and the original poster's Austria album. The pages were likewise hingeless. The copyright is 1972.

As you have indicated, I think this is an entirely different series from the Brown International series that was described in posts 2-4.

Yes, there are two separate discussions going on about the "Browns".

* More modern deluxe Scott bindings that are "Brown" in color. The original poster asked about these.

* The classic Scott "Browns" - offering spaces for all the world's stamps 1840- 1938+. (Vintage/Subway has brought the coverage up to 1940.)

For the second "classical" Browns - some might be interested in several comparison evaluations, including the "Browns", I did on my blog awhile back.

I have two of these brown US National Stamp Hingeless albums with the slipcovers. They have a raised gold-colored emblem on the binder. I tried to take a pic but it is too large for this site.

They are quite beautiful and appear very high quality with all pages being hingeless mounts.

They are basically NEW--there are no stamps in them. It's not that stamps were cherry-picked out. It's just that the albums were never used. They cover years from 1847 - 1993, BOB, air, etc. I do not collect US stamps.

I am a new user of this site. Can anyone tell me what these are worth and the best way to sell them if I decide to do that? I'd rather not do ebay. Thanks in advance.
