AR stamps of this era were 5 centavos, so it is not a horrible stretch that these would be used for the same service.

These were "overprinted" in manuscript with red ink.

Well Smaugie, It looks to me as Manuscript over the original overprint.
The "A.R." was used for "Acknowledgment of Receipt".

Yes. That is what I meant. The manuscript marking was meant as an overprint to make it an AR stamp.

The catalog states these were made for philatelic sales .But still a nice addition to a collection.
