Today I got an undated letter from Charles E. Sprague to Trunk Brothers, Printers, re setting up sample pages of a Volapük dictionary, presumably M. W. Wood's Dictionary of Volapük, which was published in 1889. Colonel Sprague, being the Lecif (President) of the North American Association for the Propagation of Volapük, was the highest-ranking Volapükist in the United States at the time. Unfortunately, I didn't get the envelope in which this letter was mailed. I'm guessing that the letter went into the printers' files, whereas the envelope stayed with the manuscript dictionary pages or else got tossed into the trash. Still, it's a very nice piece for my collection of Esperanto and other international auxiliary languages, and I got it for about the price of a cup of coffee! Other ebay items in today's mail: US #552, 553, 554, 555, 557, 559, and C4, all MNH. |

Well it wasn't exactly in my mailbox as I was out yesterday and so the parcel was returned to the Post Office in town - fortunately, as the sorting office is quite inaccessible, whereas the Post Office is a pleasant ten-minute stroll. I picked up a parcel sent to me by Somerset Stamp Auctions containing a stockbook with Norwegian stamps and a copy of the Ferchenbauer Catalogue.
I went to collect the parcel expecting something quite small and was presented with quite a heavy package about twice the size of a shoebox. All the way home I was thinking I must have been sent the wrong lots, but when I opened it I found that the catalogue is enormous - nearly 1500 pages. There are many beautiful illustrations - it's a work of art.
Sadly my collection is really a beginners accumulation and doesn't warrant the guidance of such a catalogue, but it is a beautiful book to look at and well worth the money I spent on it |

A carton of philatelic fun showed up in time for the weekend. Old albums and pages. Tons of stampin' fun! |

rogdcam, that sounds great. Sorting through a more or less random box like that is one of the things I never get tired of - buried treasure might be on the next page!
At the moment I'm going through the residue of boxes like that I got some time ago and have only just got round to looking at in detail and finding so much to add to my collections
Have a great time! |

We did not get mail for a couple days due to snow. It was not much so suspect they have not finished sorting it. I did get two ebay lots in on Tuesday and they are now mounted. This lot was not described as the sideways watermark (the minor variety) but all were. |

I got a shipment of stamps I ordered from Mystic, using their rewards system. I was sorely disappointed. I believe they segregate their worst specimens to ship as rewards (free if you use the points you've accumulated). One old stamp was so badly off-center that it was uncollectible. And newer, used ones were ruined by the cancellations being far too dark. One cancellation was a black blob covering two-thirds of the face of the stamp. Mystic doesn't provide scans of the stamps one buys, and that's a big problem. |

Sure, I can returnt them, but the cost of postage when returning low-priced items makes it uneconomical. |

Sleepy, I agree about the cost of returning them not being worthwhile but I'd let them know about your displeasure! My dealings with Mystic have always been excellent. The one time they messed up my order, I ended up with a new stock book. They sent me the wrong one. I called them and instead of returning it, they just told me to keep it with their apologies and proceeded to send me the correct book. Dan |

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example. I collect for enjoyment, not investment. APS Member #223433 Postmark Collectors Club Member #6333 Meter Stamp Society Member #1409 |
