number 3 may be a bit hard to find ....rarely avail on limited auction sites, and quite expensive ...

I have all of these except #3. I settled for a proof on this value. I never paid catalog for any of them. Two of the other most expensive ones I bought very nice looking copies that had thins. These look great from the front and I could never afford a sound copy in this condition. That is my basic set. I have a good many of the re-entries and paper varieties, colors, etc. as I have a slightly advanced collection of these. I even have two #4's with stitch watermark on two different papers. I have only paid a fraction of catalog for the majority of these. A couple hard to find copies I have paid more for. The secret is looking through as many stamp sources as possible and spotting unidentified varieties at bargain prices. It takes years to do this but it can be done. I would stay away from the truly expensive auctions unless I wanted something extremely rare. I have won a few from the big firms with low bids but that is an exception usually I get out bid. I have to stay with in my budget so I only bid what I can afford.

I hope to have some time later this year to sort out duplicates including re-entries to sell but haven't had time yet. I want to make sure I don't sell a variety that I want to keep so I need to carefully go back through my stamps and double check the identifications I have made prior to putting together a bunch to sell.

I get stamps from circuit books and ebay. I occasionally buy from auction houses, too. Auction houses are a bit more expensive. I try to find things people have misidentified and are priced inexpensively.

watermark, when you sell that 32 take a small chunk and buy a #3 and then travel the world.

Yea I would like that but I may be looking at funding my retirement with some of it. I don't want to go ape and spend it all. Of course a nice #3 would be awful tempting.

That #32 is an example of finding a great stamp because it was never identified properly. I just hope I get that really big payoff from it. Keeping my fingers crossed....

good for you, I think you will do well with it. One of the auction houses (maybe Eastern) recently had a nice #3 on auction. Not sure what it went for. I think they estimated $75,000.

Ron Brigham's pence collection was on display in Halifax at the Royal. One pane featured eight no. 3's including two on cover and two of the three known mint pairs. Also on display was the only known mint block of no. 1. But the exhibit went on for pane after pane. It was hard to take it all in.

He also won first prize for an exhibit of the Quebec tercentenary issue.

Needless to say, there were security guards watching the exhibit very carefully.

I find it incredible that he has been able to build up one collection after another that is unsurpassed on so many different early Canadian issues. Meanwhile, I find it hard enough to just specialize on one or two stamps even before I think that I might be able to exhibit something philatelic at least once in my life.

I suppose many members here have been to major stamp exhibits but this was a first for me and a real eye-opener. The exhibitors, in most cases, are philatelists in the true meaning of the word and generally have a much narrower and highly specialized focus than I would ever have. Some of them have spent many years building up their collections and the results are truly amazing and inspiring. What is most astonishing is how they could ever find some of the material they have acquired.

I was particularly impressed with a couple of relatively young collectors from St. Pierre & Miquelon who displayed several prize-winning exhibits using the early issues and postal history material of the Islands. Apparently, stamp collecting is thriving on SP&M.

I forgot to mention that the price realized for an almost perfect (somewhat close margin on the right side) mint no. 3 auctioned by Eastern Auctions in Halifax was $77,050, not including the 15% buyer's premium. This was from the Montclair collection which was sold over two nights at the Royal. An equally lovely mint no. 1 realized the same price.

Deep pockets also help in the collecting cause. Brigham, use to run his own auction house also. So he would purchase stuff outright from collectors and peddle the balance and recoup his investments.
