Years ago (perhaps 10-12) ebay was a great place to find bargains if you searched for mis or badly described items. This is my favorite - the auction title was "old postage" and I doubt if many people even bothered to look at the listing (this was before every listing had a thumbnail). I think I only paid around $5 for this cover - it doesn't have great value as is (#11), but I will always love my old postage

Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Interesting. Actually my "saved searches" on ebay include "old letter." Usually that brings me a flood of ads for letter openers and letter holders but the odd "old letter." What you want is to find items put up by people who don't know how to properly describe them - or don't care! Which of course is your message. "Old stamps" would also work or "old stamp collection." As I collect ephemera I'm always on the lookout for letters or documents - and they come in a variety of categories.

your method I thought was working until....

this one almost got me , I figured for a little over a buck for a box of stamps but he is in the fine print selling each envelope (glassy) for 1.29 plus the $1.93 for postage....the brat! ha lol. $3.22 for 1 packet...I Pass---> if your interested he has 10 packets left."50-70 Years Old US Mint Vintage Postage Stamp Collection in Envelopes" Deceptive and really out right lie of a headline on the auction.

I still like the browsing topic "old postage" here is one for you all instead of "BOX" as in box of stamps try "CARTON" as in carton of stamps....

A few times I have benefited from poorly described listings or listings with few images. Each time I merely surmised from the terse description that the lot was more extensive or valuable than advertised. The lots got little or no interest from others and I got a real bargain. One was a nearly complete Swedish collection for a pittance. I haven't seen much like that lately.
