I have a 2002 edition, from when I started collecting about a decade ago. Took a quick check online to find where I could purchase an update, and the most recent I'm seeing is 2009 (and for a price, used, that I'm not willing to pay: $186 via Amazon, a crazy $366 Buy It Now on ebay!). Would it be a good guess that it is no longer being published (and that 2009 was the last update)?

I believe you are correct. One website refers to 2009 as the "final edition -- available at a premium due to rarity".

Okay, well, sad as it is to say, my 2002 edition is probably not that out of date, as far as nominal valuations are concerned. And the main value (to me) has always been the "pricing multiplier" section, and I imagine that is as useful as it ever was.

I cannot imagine why anyone would pay those kinds of prices for the 2009 edition. It is simply not that unique of an item to justify such prices. I cannot believe that anyone is actually paying those prices.

Amazon prices are all over the board. I've seen ten year old Scott catalogs - any volume for over $1000 each. The booksellers rarely have a clue on how to price philatelic books. If you search enough and patient you can get other volumes and other philatelic books for low as 99 cents plus $3.99 shipping. There's no rhyme nor reason. Just choose wisely.

The Scott FDC catalogue is very nice and has more unique information than the U.S. Specialized like PNC FDCs. I have the 2004 edition and it works for me. I have another from the 1990's that I was going to give away, but I might have to rethink that ;)

I have a 2001 that cost me $1 about 5 years ago. But there is a big difference in the catalog after 2001.

They are busy producing a set of specialized Mellone catalogs by the decade. The 3 volumes for 1940's through 1960's are already available.

You are referring to updates to the original Mellone Specialized Cachet Catalog's, correct? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mellone-Spe...90863145735?Like this one
