Sea-jug mail? I gotta say I've heard of tin-can mail and even rocket mail but not Sea-Jug mail. Is anyone familiar with this?

I-L-S, this is a first for me as well.

I am wondering if it was a one-time event and it was given a special name?

There are Sea-Jug covers from 1951-1954, and some cinderella stamps were issued in commemoration. I am afraid I know nothing beyond that.

There's an interesting article in Popular Mechanics (January 1954) which discusses Sea-jug mail. It can be viewed here courtesy of Google books:

I wasn't aware that there existed for a number of years. To be honest, I didn't see the 2 different years in the image ILS provided. Some days my eyes are better than others Quite interesting.

Thanks too for the link Jenny2u.

A common joke that was used on newcomers/green sailors in the Navy is to have them stand watch for the "Mail Bouy"...."Why, that's how we receive our mail at sea buddy"....... along with getting the 'bulkhead remover', 'umbilical cord', etc. I wonder if this has some similar connection. GB Commonwealth back-of-book stuff...

issued in 1944 during WW2 when shipping losses to German U-Boats was actually decreasing but the Crown Agents issued special stamps to cover the eventuality that shipwreck could occur to maritime traffic heading across the Atlantic from the colonies. Printed on Parkinized paper and with waterproof inks they were never popular with sailors who regarded it as tempting fate. No known used copy survives today. The short-lived issue, although not popular, had a re-invention when the design was slightly modified for the extremely popular Victory Omnibus issues of 1946.

Mariners?

Superstitious?

It is hard to believe that a postal agency in a country which might be fairly described as having a strong & pervasive maritime culture would issue such a stamp in the first place.

Lord Nelson must be spinning in, well, St Paul's Cathedral.

Nice find, ILS. Nice link, Jenny2U.

Cheers,
