I don't have anything to add information wise but I must say how fascinating posts like this one are! Thank you for this. It has helped me to understand how to track down routes of the foreign mails from the folded letter period a little more.

The damaged area of the address on your letter seems to be Wilmington, North Carolina. Wilmington is a small but old Atlantic Ocean port city on Cape Fear near the southern border with South Carolina.
