On the 19th of February, 1878, Thomas A. Edison was granted a patent for his Phonograph or Speaking Machine. It was a sensation at the time but was soon replaced by different models because it was rather awkward to use and susceptible to breaking down. New techniques such as the disc gramophone became more popular.

Hello, TF1, Nice to see someone continuing here! Yes, the elder Brother Grimm was born on the 24th of February 1786, his older brother on the 4th of January 1785. They became famous for having collected and compiled about 200 fairy tales in German, but they also published Danish, Irish and Norse tales. Their studies of the German language led to the publication of the first true German dictionary. (The new sets of semipostal stamps probably fit better in the thread on Folklore.)
