Besides the UPU, which tends to be incomplete, is there a simple reference source (besides Scott or Stanley Gibbons via omission) that states for a variety of countries that stamps that are purported to have been issued in a particular time period might be cinderellas?

My question arises after looking at stamps with fire appliances, or fire engines on ebay. Besides the traditional countries, that have long standing, functioning postal administrations, there are quite a few that raise your eyebrows. One that came to mind was Djibouti in 2001-2003. Granted, the country had its challenges leading up to a compromise in 2000. Reading about the postal administration raises serious questions on their ability to issue some of the volume implied. Furthermore, checking what stamps Djibouti did issue in this time period, turns up an extremely limited set.

All this to ask, is there a quick reference guide? Personally, it is just how a particular field is filled in and not worry about it. I realise that while Scott and SG tend to be conservative, Michel and Yvert tend to list a lot that I can not find in the former pair.

Thank you,

I don't follow your post. To my mind "cinderellas" are not issued by postal administrations.

There are a fairly large number of "stamps", bearing the name of various countries, Somalia, Guinea-Bissau, Western Sahara, that have been produced by various "groups" (whether companies, revolutionary bodies, profit seekers, immaterial which) that were not issued by a recognised postal authority. Is there a list for various countries that says that country X did not issue any stamps in a particular time period.

In theory, because they were not issued by an authority, Scott and Stanley Gibbons do not generally list them. However, to confuse manners, Michel and Yvert do. I was hoping for some simple way when searching for various topical to know that a stamp is actually legitimate, and not a "cinderella". If there is a better term, a fake for example, my apologies.

There is a list and I will try to find it. I have seen it here at SCF somewhere so will search around a bit.

You will find thousands of these Bogus types being sold on ebay, Delcampe etc.
You will also find that most Cinderella collectors do not associate themselves with this type of item. I know I don't.

Oh, been past this site! The problem here is that you find what is legitimate, with the assumption that everything else is a fake. Yet, the very countries that where this is happening can be rather slow at sending the WPU examples or listings of what actually is valid, giving unscrupulous groups a window of opportunity to flood the market.

But, all in all, I am hoping for a quick guide to assist in a rather lengthy list of Land-Rovers on postage stamps that I have been working on (past 120 examples now, which in turn is feeding a series of articles for a Land-Rover club newsletter, and eventually their website and anywhere else interested).

One article is about these types of stamps, and when I can not find Scott or SG numbers, grow a bit leery, yet realise, like the WPU, the host postal administration might just be a bit bureaucratic and slow. Like this rather amusing blog -
