This year I have been actively researching my chosen specializations and building my library accordingly. Last week, I bought Weiss' book on the 15c banknotes off ebay for a good price, but it exposes an obvious hole in my library.

My question is this: Were there other books published that specialize in banknotes? There are some great books that cover the whole of US classics (EG - Brookman's books), but I have never seen or heard of any other books that specialize in the large Banknotes. Additionally, I have read some amazing posts on this forum from a number of experts who have studied and written about large Banknotes, but have never published their work (Russ and Essayk to name a couple).

I am looking for some recommendations ...

Thanks!

Brian

If you include Postage Dues, I suggest the George Arfken book:

"Postage Due, The Large Numeral Postage Due Stamps, 1879-1894"

I think you probably own or have read anything I could suggest but I am also "in the market" for some more specialized information on the subject. Also, speaking of the devil so-to-speak I too have taken an interest in the 15˘ Webster. Other than Brookmans books and what Bill Weiss has written I don't really know of any other material on these? I too, would be interested to hear of more reference books.

Banknote Postal History - If you intend to include postal history in your 1870's era US collection, I would suggest that you do not limit yourself to a single denomination, And, if you do, do not pick a high denomination. Single stamp postal history collections are too severely limited in the kinds of uses available. The higher the denomination the more problems arise and by the time you get to the 15c, there is very little diversity in available uses.

On the 15c stamp, Stephen Tedesco wrote some articles on the proofs and essays in the "Chronicle" and has a gold medal single frame exhibit of essays of the 15c Webster. He also owns many of the "key" items needed to put together a good collection (another limitation of the single stamp collection).

My book on New York Foreign Mail Cancels gives a good overview of the Banknote Period, but the book is now over $100. retail (the CD is available for less than half of that on my website www.stampexpertizing.com), There are others too, such as "United States Banknotes Identification Guide" by Pipes and Einhorn.

Some further information on the book stated above by Bill Weiss: U.S. Large Banknotes Identification Guide, Strategies & Methods of Identification by Stephen Einhorn and Robert Pipes (25 pages softbound). This book is designed to make life simpler for collectors of these stamps. The large illustrations allow close inspection of the many details that differentiate the varieties, but the authors warn that a "magnifying glass and a good light source are essential for proper identification of these stamps." This is available from the APS: http://stamps.org/Publications

Thanks for the recommendations. I purchased the Large Banknote ID guide from APS. Am a bit surprised there's not more specialized literature on the topic.

A great place to look at online is the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society (USCSS) and they have a page on the Large Banknotes. See: http://www.uspcs.org/the-1870-93-is...note-issues/
Also, check out the following link: http://www.1847usa.com/1870identifier.htm
Also: http://arago.si.edu/index.asp?con=1...&tid=2029277 (There's a click down box "Select a Subcategory" for each different denomination or you can click on the picture in the box on the right for each different stamp denomination.)
