Yesterday, I received this envelope which some marker monkey zealously attacked with his felt pen. Seven of the eight stamps have a proper cancellation on them so why didn't the postal employee just mark the one that was missed??????? |

With regards to my earlier post about an hour ago, I just noticed that the cancels were applied at my home town of Regina, Saskatchewan and not at the place of origin for the envelope which is Harrisburg, NC where I assume the marker monkey lives and works. Why would Canada Post cancel most of the stamps at the destination? |

Not sure if anyone mentioned if the monkey marker reduces the value of the stamp or it just makes it less desirable? |

Pen cancels are generally frowned on by collectors and dealers -- so they reduce both the value and desirability.

Quote:Why would Canada Post cancel most of the stamps at the destination? Probably a bored clerk going through piles of envelopes and cancelling them and it just didn't get noticed right away and then too late to not cancel it. More effort to change than to maintain the same way you are going. It is too bad they couldn't issue something with more eye appeal to postal clerks and employees to help the stamps look better. Like some European countries do. |

Those Thailand stamps look nice Nells, or would have looked nice. Darn employee too quick with the pen. These Canada 2002 Tourist Attractions stamps are on ebay for 99c start. I wonder if anyone will buy them? The marker marks look kind of artistic a bit. |

Nells -- that hurts me to look at it...
No doubt the pen scratches were done by USPS employee, yet the stamps are clearly canceled by the stamp; plus, they're foreign stamps so there would be no danger of reuse in the USA anyway.
Jeez, that's frustrating.
I think you should the card (or a copy) to the postmaster general with a letter of complaint!

Is the postal clerk accusing the sender of being a miser? Sounds like a keeper to me, a real postal oddity. |
