Do You Exhibit At Home?
Okay, you're not into Competitive Philately; but do you exhibit at home?
Q/ Does a friend or guest ever ask you about your stamp collection?
If 'yes', do you then sit them down in front of a massive binder, with its page after page of row after row of, uh, stamps?
Have you considered engineering a more inviting alternative?
How about a single page, with more explanation than stamps?
You could pick something of interest to your friends & neighbors - your statehood stamp, perhaps? - and mount a mint single, hinge an SOTN, and include a plate block, and the FDC - and include a bit of explanation about what is collected, how & why.
Obviously, you can do better than that but, baby steps, no need to raise the bar too high on the first attempt.
Once its ready, head to your local hobby store, pick a frame, go home, and hang it on your wall.
Each month, rinse & repeat.
Save these pages in their own binder and if, G-d Willing, somebody wants to see more, you will have more bite-size bits ready to go.
Q/ Do You Exhibit At Home?
Cheers,
/s/ ikeyPikey

No guest has the patience for more than three pages of stamps, so I stick to a few reliable crowd-pleasers. Usually, that ends up being the Third Reich or some topical accumulation relevant to the interest of the guest. |

I actually put together a 16-page (1 frame) exhibit of "A United States Stamp Primer" with the intent to present to our local stamp club. After some arm-bending, I improved it some and exhibited at a show (not to be competitive, because it wasn't) to introduce the casual show attendee to US stamps. It covered:
- Regular issues (from Classical to later issues including the Columbians, Farley's Follies, Prexies, etc.
- Airmail and Back of Book (BOB)
- Scott unlisted stamps (tax stamps, Rocket Mail, labels, cinderellas)
- Essay, Proof and Test Stamps
- Design Varieties (secret marks, etc.)
- Manufacturing variations and flaws (perforation types, watermarks, paper types, design transfers), Errors, Freaks and Oddities (EFOs)
- Plate Multiples and Varieties (Plate Blocks, Line Pairs, PNCs, etc.)
- Cancels and Obliterations (couldn't NOT include marcophily!)
It still received a silver/bronze award (even though it probably didn't deserve it), and is still intact today. It was a very fun project and the type, I think, that could interest casual observers to get into stamps! (Disclaimer: it DID have it's rough spots and some small mistakes, so it may have strayed/digressed in some spots, but was not intended to mislead.... but to take people off their typical track --- however I took no responsibility for any long-term effects on anyone....!). |

The only stamp related items on constant display are old post office card board display units. One for black history stamps and another for Marvel comics. It has the Silver Surfer on it. |

No. The people I know already accept I am a lunatic and collect stamps, and hoard half of the world in other collectibles. They show no interest in seeing anything, so if I exhibit, I am just doing it for the burglars. |

I have personal stamps here mostly (for now, heh, heh) and because they are personal or personalized, this makes a difference to people on a personal level.
They usually have an interest in what they can do for themselves with the idea. They add to my collecting fun. |

I don't even mention my stamps any more. If I do, I usually get a disinterested "Uh huh..." from just about anybody. Showing several pages would just leave them thinking that my surgery had more effect on me than I am willing to admit. |

I always wanted to put a stamp exhibit together and impress other Philatelist , then I did some self-research into exhibiting and writing up a exhibit .It was interesting ,first I had to pay to exhibit with fees at stamp shows ,second the stamp shows were a big surprise less than 30% of the visitors walked thru the exhibit area . Third, even of that small group that did, they are a small fraction to stop and read what was in front of them . My guess is that 100 people at any given show have a reading and study interest . Fourth you have to improve your exhibit with new material and better write ups to get it right between each exhibit for the next show to improve the medal awards . So since I was looking for better results I went a different route and now I got thousands of viewers and even got press write ups for my exhibit. But the best part are the request for me to exhibit . |

My website is my exhibit... far safer than allowing viewers into my home. |

I like to show my stamps to friends and family. One of my friend use to be a stamp collector when he was young but never got back to it like me. It's true they don't spend a long time looking at it but they don't come home for that purpose. It's hard to make my two sisters stop talking for more than 5 minutes and look at my stamps. No one i've shown my stamp collections ever said I waist my money. Daniel |
