Hi stampfan,

Nice card. The small cross is a 'Croix Patˇe', which made up the Victorian 'Maltese Cross' cancellation, which itself was not a true Maltese Cross but an amalgamation of the Maltese Cross, the Croix Patˇe, and the Tudor Rose symbol. I believe the 'Croix Patˇe' design was also used to cancel USA stamps of the 1880s.

Terry

PS. The German version is called a 'Tatzenkreuz' and both this and 'Croix Patˇe' would translate as 'footed cross'

Edited for typos. TC

Hi stampfan,

You are most welcome. I thought this site might also interest you. One of their 19th century Windermere launches below.

I hate to be off-topic, so can we pretend that we can see the stern of TC's steamboat on the far left side of my Windermere postcard?

Bowness, the town from which the card is addressed, is discussed here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowness-on-Windermere

Dundale (estate), in Villa Nova PA USA, is discussed here:

https://www1.villanova.edu/villanov...dundale.html

I've left the name of the addressee in the scan, as the family were the owners of the estate.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

It is also fun to look at the hotel from a different angle. Notice especially in this postcard the unique sculptured tree just below the Old England Hotel sign:
