Watermark is the key. Check options Scott 3, 9 (perf 12 1/2), 17, 24. Good luck! |

Wert,
From what I read, I believe the #17 would be the unwatermarked version so hopefully you can see a clear watermark.

Looks like "1872" but that is no indication of the year of the stamp..I just got stamps from ebay in the mail that were 1969 stamps with Aug, 2014 cancellation.. |

According to Scott's, Watermark 166 is "Colorless Numerals". The examples are 1, 2 and 3. |

Here is Scott #166 watermark. Funny thing it has lines running horizontally across the stamp...There are about 14 or 15 lines in total and the picture shows (Not too good) where they are..Easy to see them when the stamp is in your hand but hard when taking a picture. |

Those "lines" probably indicates the stamp is on horizontally laid paper. It's a good chance you have Scott #24. |

Did you ever check for a watermark as a couple recommend to distinguish it??? You never mention the results. |

As this topic is current what do you chaps think of this, my friends Grandfather (died 1980) has it down as SG4 - struggling to see a watermark with my limited ability but 15 perfs. |
