I was just about to put the 746 in the Sweden dupe envelope when something felt a little funny about it. Upon further review I noticed that the stamp was embossed with the text raised on the back.
I was wondering what would be the purpose of that, since it seems to be in English. The front of the stamp has a light normal out of the way (location) cancel.
Below the lettering is another emboss but I can't tell what it is.
Kinda odd I thought. Think I will keep it with notation in my database.
Anyone have an idea of what it might be?

Thanks, Chuck

Is this stamps Gothenburg harbor? Very hard to read but I can see the word "vill" = will, other unable
to read. Is thia a stamping of word on the backside or impress of cancellation frontside?

The first word is definitely "Village".
The second line looks like "Guildford" or something similar.
The third line looks like a number "D 3704" or something similar.

One thought: I wonder if it could be an embossed return address stamp that was applied after the postage stamp was affixed to the envelope?

It is Sweden Gothenburg Harbor stamp Rolle, and I can find a reference to Guildford which is a county town in Surrey, England. 27 miles SW of London.
It is a impress from the front side and far away from the minor cancellation on the front.
Cancellation is upper left and the impress is lower right.
Also (on the back side) just above "village" there is a QW VLLA.

I would say Wt1 that the impress was made from the front, but not too apparent at first glance. Trying to figure out the purpose of it...ah well, will put it in the album with notation.
A scan of the front does not reveal the impression but can be seen with naked eye, word "village" runs pretty much up on the line from dock to bow.

Guildford is indeed the County Town (administrative centre) of Surrey, UK. There is an area of the town called Onslow Village which probably accounts for the W VILLAGE in the top line. The number on the last line may be a phone number. Area dialling codes were rolled out through the UK in the 1960s, before this a caller from another town would go through the operator and ask for e.g. "Guildford 3704". I agree this is probably the effect of an address embosser like this:

Thanks Jim,
Good information. Interesting that they would emboss the stamp. Comes to mind of why emboss a Swedish stamp with U.K. information, also the emboss is almost impossible to read from the front of the stamp. Maybe the emboss did show through the cover.
Either way, thanks again.
Chuck

Maybe someone was playing or practicing with an embosser.

The stamp obviously originated in Sweden. The crisp lettering suggests it was off paper when embossed in Guildford. Was the UK sender a stamp dealer or just someone sending a few foreign stamps to a philatelic nephew?
