I recently inherited an album full of letters that my grandfather collected all with cancelled first edition stamps starting back in 1939. I have absolutely no knowledge about stamps and am wondering how I find out more about the value of these, if any.

Welcome, Chuck. There are a lot of variables involved with values. In general, US stamps and covers (envelopes with stamps on them) from about the early 1930's-onward don't have much value to collectors since there are so many of them available. However - there ARE exceptions. If you can take a few pictures and post them here, there are plenty of knowledgeable people who will offer some good input.

Chuck: Perhaps you mean "day of issue" - as "first edition" refers to books.

And perhaps envelopes instead of letters? Also known as covers in the hobby.

Thanks for the advice. I will post photos of the more interesting and dated covers, but I have around 100 in all. Is there a resource book on these things?

Seeing as you posted in the "WORLD" area, it might be very interesting to see what you have...especially as you mentioned the start date being 1939. Some areas were obviously experiencing war-time conditions and letters/covers can be of great interest.

Your "resource" book would depend on what you have... if "letters" then postal history resources would be in order.... but if, as already mentioned, you have First Day Covers, then obviously a FDC index/catalog/online resource would apply. As ,again, already mentioned, don't expect great value if they are "modern" FDCs ...expect interest but not monetary value (there are exceptions of course...but probably few).
