Newfoundland -Scott # 184 And #253

NFLD with its multiple printings makes collecting a challenge . I've had pages with the wrong stamps all over due to the reprints.

Thanks nitrolures..Appreciate it...got the gauge but I use gimp...alternative to photo shop and its free..got the stamp over the gauge but trying to find out how to move it around..just takes time..thanks again nitrlures.

Take a look at Newfoundland Scott # 61....Queen Victoria stamp...the number "1" in the UR corner is reveresd...weird.

Your right nitrolures...there are so many versions of Newfoundland stamps...it drives me crazy.

I'm not sure how to use Gimp but seen you have done some great stuff with it. In photoshops image ready there is a "magic wand" drag tool so you can easily drag the gauge over the scan and manouver as needed. Since you have to use 600x600 scans for this to work the amount of detail can be quite amazing .

Nitrolures, you are a saviour..You told me to scan at 600 x 600 dpi and use photoshop..Well, I am a firm believer in open source software..So I used GIMP..Photoshop is very expensive and for those of you out there that use Windows OS there is a FREE version for you to download...Nitrolures look at the result (more fine tuning), but this Scott # 636 was 13.3 x 13.3 perf, and your gauge hit it right on the nose..See below..Thanks again nitrolures..

This is why I love and only collect Newfoundland : you can spend hours or days feeding the obsession by playing with the same stamps over and over again (and thus not spend money)...

As has been posted before, Unitrade has limits and the best resource for Newfoundland is Walsh (and Butts) "Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue (NSSC). A must have WERT---get the digital PDF and have it with you at all times.

Here is your specific variants on the issue:

Unitrade/Scott #184 (1932-1938 First Issue) had 4 known perforate types of the 1 cent Codfish, GRAY BLACK:
1. 13.5 x 13.5
2. 13.75 x 13.75
3. 14 x 14
4. 14.2 x 14.2
Engraved with Coat of Arms Watermark. #1 is common and worth $1. Others are rare and range from $25 to $40

Unitrade #253 (1941-49 Second Issue, Watermarked and engraved) 1 cent, DARK GRAY) had 4 types as well:
1. 12.5 x 12.5
2. 12.5 x 12.8
3. 12.8 x 12.8
4. 12.8 x 12.5

#1 is common worth about $1. Rest are about $10

tommy..Mine is starting to look more like a rounded off 12.5 perf as nitrolures suggests...But should I place them in watermark solution for curiosity...?

My guess is your image is #253 and probably the 12.8 x 12.8 type. but could be the 12.5 on horizontal or vertical too. since price is same, I would not bother--just image them with your cool and fancy data base as #253.

Always fun to watermark to see, but in this case both issues had them. However, if you want to get deeper--Walsh catalog cites 4 different orientations of the watermark for the latter issue, so that is fun to sort out. I typically use a bright light not solution, because I am cheap and they normally show up clearly this way.

Glad to see you got the gauge working with Gimp. I'm not sure how or where I got Photo shop for free but if it wasn't free I would be using another that was. Knowing how accurate this gauge is really makes me wish it was more accepted as a standard tool.
Tommy- I totaly agree that NFLD can easily become a lifelong obsession . At first glance you would think completion is almost attainable but the more you dig the deeper the hole gets. I'll likely never give up but flip flop back to it so as not to get frustrated. NFLD also has some amazing revenues not often seen I'd like to pick up but alas the almighty dollar stands in the way.
EDIT-- Wert I believe your 2 stamps would definatly be the 12.8x 12.8 . I only sugested the rounding to 12.5 based on unitrade info but if there was a 12.8 option it surely fits.

Hi, All these comments look correct. What is surprising is that you found p. 13.75. These, if they exist at all, are very rare. Perhaps you could check these (if you still have the stamps as this is a late posting!).

Ok Codfish..I will dig them out again and re-perf them.
