Newfoundland -Scott # 184 And #253

Hi guys...ok..I am going to need some help here with these Newfoundland stamps...I have about 28 "codfish" stamps....I was sorting them out bt Scott # and by perforations.

I have 9 Scott #253 with 12.5 x 12.5 perf......that is ok
I have 11 Scott #184 with 13.5 x 13.5 perf.....that is ok
I have 5 Scott #184 with 13.75 x 13.75 perf....that is ok
1 have 1 Scott #184 with 14.0 x 14.0 perf......that is ok

Now here is where it gets confusing..I have 2 Scott #184 with 12.75 x 12.75 perf....Unitrade makes no reference to a 12.75 x 12.75 perf..I have been racking my brain trying to understand what I found..I used the (new) perf gaug a dozen times and still come up with the same perf...any ideas....?

Holmes & Associates lists perforation measurements on the 1932 issue as;

13 ¼
13 ½

Really stallzer...Thats what Holmes & Associates lists it as..??...Yikes, just gets more complicated...Got to find out why only 2 have this weird perf...Thanks for that information.

I will try to get a picture posted with the gauge showing the perforations later this afternoon.

Wert, also take a picture with the perf gauge lined up with the 13 ¼ .

ok...will do that to...Ok, here are the 2 perfs pictures.

13.25 perf


12.75 perf.

Can you nudge the first scan up to the 13 ¼ line ? Sitting around 13.17 or thereabouts.

stallzer...Here is as close as I can get to 13.25 perf...Sorry..upside down, but the same thing.

the 12.75 looks OK on the gauge but the 13.25 is off quite a bit.

Maybe a new perf.for scott #184 nitrolures...?
Is that even possible...?

Can you send me 600x600 scan of the ones in question. All can be in same scan and I can use the computer perf gauge on them. My email is my name at bell dot net. I only have unitrade for nfld but I;m sure there are some better resources. That codfish issue is notorious for slip prints . Have you checked any others from the same series? I have yet to set up my stamp room at the new house so I don't dare start pulling things out for fear they may never be seen again.

Thanks for posting the scan Wert, I agree with your findings in that it certainly is closer to 12 ¾ than it is to 13 ¼. My fingers are crossed hoping you've stumbled onto something good.

So where does one go from here to bring it to someones attention...?

wert - Here are 4 views of the 2 stamps that are indeed 12.75 all sides. I am pretty sure if you check, these will have watermarks and be from the waterlow printings (unitrade 253) rather than the perkins bacon printings (unitrade 184). The second printings were supposed to be 12.5 which may be rounded to include 12.75 .

Email sent with the e gauge attached. Great tool especially when your eyes are starting to go or hands getting a bit shaky. Very accurate simple to use gauge.
