Just trying to figure out the authenticity of this 81 Para. I know the cancels were typically a double circle rubber stamp but I haven't seen many examples and I am no expert to speak to this. Looking for a bit of help. Thank you everyone!
I don't believe it is genuine. The top of the "1" in 81, the bottom of the right ear, the heaviness of the lines, and the overall look, are the primary reasons I say this. There are numerous other spotting features that this one fails, too.
Don't do anything drastic until someone more qualified than me chimes in. (And in any event, I'd keep it as a forgery.)
Moldova 1858, 81 parale. Only 2016 stamps were issued and ONLY 709 were sold at post offices. VERY SHORT validity: issued 15.06.1858, valid till 31.10.1858 (less than 4 month). Diameter varies, 81 parale have a diameter of 18,75 mm (27 & 54 parale= 19,5 mm, 108 parale = 20,25 mm)
So, there are only 709 original stamps (all unsold stamps were destroyed in 1874). There are less than 100 authenticated in collections.
I`m no expert. I compared this stamp with the design characteristics pictured in a Romanian Stamp Catalogue. In my opinion this is a forgery. The ears are very suspect, especially left ear.
Definitely a forgery, the closer I look at the details the more confident I am. The hair and ears are completely wrong and lacking the detail of an original.
