Hi guys..I have been going through my world stamps, cause I ignored them for a long, long time..Anyways, I am trying to identify this stamp..Here is what I got so far...It is from great Britain - Scotland - Wales & Monmouthshire - Machin...YIKES...Ok, now I believe it is either MH55b or MH203..can anyone help...?

now the weird thing if you look at this stamp, there is something I have NEVER seen on a stamp before...There are 2 punch outs where 2 ovals can be removed for some strange reason..Does anyone know what that is all about..??
Thanks..Robert

They are security measures to prevent counterfeiting.

Explained in Wiki as follows:

Quote:
In February 2009, security features were increased on "Machin" self-adhesive stamps to avoid the reuse of uncancelled used stamps retrieved on mail. Both the effigy and the background were printed with continuous "ROYAL MAIL" iridescent printing. Two ellipsoidal shear panels were added to each stamp and the water soluble layer between the stamp and the adhesive was abandoned. These two later features were intended to render the stamps difficult to take off mail and to store for reuse (but in effect are easily overcome by the careful use of a sharp knife edge). Collectors are advised to not attempt to soak such stamps off, but to save them on pieces cut from the envelope.

The security features also included a minute change to the background printing of "ROYAL MAIL" where one letter is replaced to identify the source of the stamp. For example, instead of "ROYAL MAIL" in one place in the upper right of the stamp is printed "FOYAL MAIL" to indicated that that stamp came from a booklet of four stamps. This feature made it easier to identify the source of an individual, used stamp and track down production problems.

Wert, from the flood of answers about identifying that stamp you must have guessed: it is a doggie! Well, just kidding, but there are hundreds of varieties in the Machins. For a list of them and a way to identify them go to this following (Canadian!) website: www.adminware.ca/machin.htm And have fun!

I don't have a Scott catalog handy at the moment, but I can say it's definitely not MH55b or MH203. The security cuts are a relatively new addition to Machins. Try MH404.

A gentleman at my stamp club last night held a bag of, probably, a thousand or so Machins, and talked about the many different methods needed to i.d. these. Various perf guides, special lights, and, by inference, infinite patience. He was going to tackle them.
But then he started talking about how he's just getting into US, and tried to i.d. some of the early Washingtons. At that he immediately threw his hands up in disgust and said he put them away, because it was too complicated.
Hey! Like George Harrison sang, 'It's what you value'.

Wert, the link works for me. You reckon it is a Yanks only link? Go back, and when it says something in a block click on "machin" and it will come up!
