Egypt issued a stamp to commemorate the Suez Canal but used an image of the Panama Canal. I was wondering if this stamp was actually sold to the public or if the error was caught before release?

Thanks.

I ran to check with folks nearby; sadly, the stamp was never more than a press release.

I would dearly love to acquire a copy of the original press release, et al, but perhaps it was only digital :(

Cheers,

THAT seems unlikely. Well-understated. Will revert, and revert.

Q/ Have catalog numbers for these stamps been issued by Gibbons, et al?

My 'source' has gone quiet, leaving me unsure of what to think about the listings on ebay.

I see no listings at Bidstart (which is, after all, managed by grownups).

I see one listing at Delcampe (from one of the two sellers on ebay).

I see no reviews for Egypt at http://www.stampsmarter.com/

But I see 55 *SOLD* at http://www.ebay.com/itm/Egypt-Withd...em2341042f80

That ebay seller is in Cairo, and has >3k sales, suggesting s/he has something to lose.

OTOH, one of the standard tourist traps in Cairo is a perfume shop where you name the fragrance (and it seems to be just about *any* fragrance) and the guy mixes it, with drops on his forearm, right before your eyes. People who know their favorite fragrance (not me) say that he really knows his stuff.

It would be worth a few bucks to own decent forgeries, but I am having my doubts about my doubts.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

This updated Linn's Stamp News article suggests that the Egypt "error" stamps (depicting the Panama Canal) were actually issued on August 5 and sales "halted" on September 13, 2014, so there were genuine "error" stamps in collectors hands for more than a month.

As the article goes onto say, the "new version" of the Egyptian stamps correctly featuring the Suez Canal were released on September 16, 2014.

While we wait for delivery, here's another Suez Canal item in the news: two container ships collide.

According to STAMP magazine here in the UK the error stamp was issued as one of a three se-tenant strip of three 21 designes on 5th August. Dosn't say when withdrawn, just that a correctecd dedsign was issued mid September. The magazine illustrates both designs.

Checkout the previous post with the Linn's Stamp News link which states that sales of the "error" stamps were halted on September 13, 2014; the corrected version of the stamps were released on September 16, 2014.

I did receive them and, ever since, I've been agonizing over whether/not to have them 'expertized'.

My first thought was that the 'cert' would be part of the fun, but then I thought 'a joke too far', and then I thought ...

Oops! We have another winner:

Okay, not exactly a stamp, but in the spirit of the thread ...

At least they got the girl out of the picture!

Q/ The girl wasn't enough of a clue?
