Last week I had a business trip to London and took time to visit a number of sites related to philately or philatelic history. Images may be viewed at: http://philately.shutterfly.com
Sites included:
-- Statute of Rowland Hill in front of the former Post Office building
-- Postmans Park across the street
-- Museum exhibits and library of Royal Philatelic Society London, in which I applied for membership
-- Parts of the Tapling Collection on view at the British Library
-- Stanley Gibbons at 399 Strand
-- Argyll Etkin live auction which yielded 4 purchases of stamps and postal history
-- And, finally, a Royal Mail office from which I posted home an envelope bearing a computer-drawn souvenir cachet of my own design, based on the Mulready caricature. (Image to follow - it's in transit)

All good fun and a full week. Anyone who hasn't made the rounds of these sites should plan on it when in town.

I am jealous as I am sure that Tunisia (current domicile) doesn't have any stamp shops. It is great to read that you popped into Argyll Etkin as well. They are much under-rated, and all too often visitors get no further than SG. By the way, directly opposite SG is the Stamp Centre, which is excellent for an hour or so browsing covers.

Tim H, thank you. I actually attended Day 2 of AE's live auction on 3 October, rather than its premises, coming home with four items, two of which I regard as outright bargains. Although I had no hope of competing on the high-ticket items against the four professional dealers in attendance and their phone bidders--one of whom purchased a single Lima-to-Ecuador cover for £10,500--most items had little competitive bidding. I'm a convert. Now my dream is to save enough to check in to the Savoy for a four-day weekend of roaming around Strand. Perhaps for the big 2015 exhibition. And I love how members treat the RPSL like a private club ...
