Today it is time to think about protecting the large stamp collection. The protection level I have in mind is if the roof came off or a large tree rips open the wall and roof. The collection is worth quite a bit these days and it has been a long time since we have had one......
Yes cyclones season is coming. The 1st 3 years we were here we got 4 cyclones. One of them we had the eye go over head of us. That was a mean storm . As the calm of the eye went over us Bec carrying her two very young kids arrived on foot. The wind had just started to blow again. She lives about a KM away and had lost the best part of her roof. Then we were the closest house to her. When she arrived she said nothing and kept running with her children and wedged all her family under our breakfast bar and said nothing for about an hour. She was just shaking, totally terrified and she is one tough lady! We have had no more cyclones for 23 years......
I think he meant insurance disi. but a heavy and normally un-water proofed (but fire proof)-oddly, vault/safe isn't a half baked idea as long as you aren't dealing with water and tons of extra money and room...
Caution - a fire-proof safe is built with water in the walls of the safe. When heated this turns to steam and protects the contents. Works well with jewelry, coins, etc. but ruins mint stamps. A safe designed for anti-burglary works well. Jerry
Hi all, my most precious 11 stamps lie in a bank vault. Every few weeks I go & visit them to enjoy. The rest of my collections can disappear and I won't weep one tear. I'll just begin anew and enjoy. Heinrich
In my opinion, insurance while important, is secondary. Many of the items in my collection, while not all valuable monetarily, are irreplacable due to their unique nature. Actual protection is what is needed. In my case, anything valued over about $150 is kept in one of two large bank safe deposit boxes I rent. Anything at home other than bulk remainder lots or collections are stored in a 700 pound gun safe.
The water issue isn't a dealbreaker for me, as the vast majority of what I collect are used rather than mint.
