I recently purchased a used Scott International Album (copyright 1947) from ebay. From what I understand this used to be the Junior Album. I like the album and I know it's supposed to be a representation of classic stamps. I want to use it, but knowing what we know now, is that wise based on the paper quality. I've read things here and there on the net in terms of acidity and how it affects the stamps. Does anyone have any advice for the workability of this old album?

TIA

While I think you are correct to be concerned about paper acidity (and thickness in the case of all but the latest edition of the International), I don't think I have seen a 1947 edition where the pages have become brittle or are browning. I have seen some very early Scott Juniors where the pages are falling apart as well as paper from the 1939-1943 editions which I think is too thin to last under active use. If I were starting over, I would remount stamps from earlier editions into the latest edition which does use archival quality paper. But even though I have the latest version, I keep putting stamps into my 1969 edition so what do I know.

Thanks for the response. In my initial flip through, the pages did not feel brittle. They had some discoloration, but nothing that I wouldn't expect from a book that is almost 70 years old. The paper thickness/durability may be an issue though as it doesn't feel like it has a lot of weight to it.

I've been using a 1947 edition for over 30 years and it's still doing fine. The paper could be thicker for sure, and I've had to reinforce some of the holes, but there's no acidity issue.

Thanks for the kind words about my blog. I hope you will post your experiences on this board, positive and negative, with the Blue Volume One. My own collection is on hiatus while I'm selling my place so I am collecting vicariously. Not as much fun but it is cheaper.

Just a quick follow-up. In starting to look at my WW collection, I pulled out an assortment of WW dupes I had ready to donate. I was going through and trying to properly ID any stamps for my album listed here. One of the little gems so far is a used copy of Italy 231 with a CV of $40. While not that impressive for most collectors financially, it is enough to put a smile on my face. It also made me realize how important it is to know what you have through proper cataloging.
