Now that the list of issues is complete, I can calculate what collecting Canadian stamps has cost me this year.

1) I collect complete booklets, not booklet singles.
2) I collect coil stamps in strips of 4 (but to get the inscription I must buy strips of 10).
3) I collect inscription blocks of sheets of singles.
4) I bought the Empress of Ireland collection to get the special overprints.
5) I get Collections Canada for the issue descriptions, not the OFDC's which would be another $99.95.

Wow!

To be honest, I was not looking to attract attention to myself as a collector but to focus on the amazing amount of money needed to have a relatively complete Canada collection. I can understand why so many of the contributors to this blog have abandoned new issues.

It is increasingly disappointing to see so many issues dedicated to popular "stars" (hockey, music, comedy) in such an obvious attempt to pander to the historically-challenged.

Saving a complete booklet as opposed to a booklet single comes from earlier (cheaper) times when the centennial issues were so collectable. Now that habit adds around $350 to the bill.

Mint because... well, I'm mint right back to the $1 Jubilee.

All new issues because... it is easy (but no longer cheap) to keep the collection current for the next generation.
... which behoves me to admit that it would be foolish to think that this year's $1000+ could be recouped in the next few decades in a sale.
It is my intention to pass the collection on to the next collector in my will. I received it from my mother (CF Canada's best-looking stamp!) and improved it over the years. So the "value" of the collection lies in its relative completeness. Hence the desire to keep up with new issues.

(CanadaStamp - I do have all the collections back to 1959. I put one in the family homestead's library every Christmas.)

I'm with you Sak. I collect full booklets, souvenir sheets, coils and full sheets.

I do not however collect press sheets, commemorative envelopes or Collections Canada.
