Some New York kids interested in stamps are part of the youth group at the Collector's Club, a renowned historical society of philatelists founded in 1896. Its membership ranks included the likes of Benjamin Franklin, an avid philatelist.

Unless I'm missing something, I think Franklin preceeded both the Collector's Club and philately! (Perhaps he collected stampless covers?)

Maybe someone at the show was pulling the reporter's leg ...?

Reporters often get their facts mixed up. I actually wondered about that quote, too, as Benjamin Franklin lived from 1706-1790, well before philately came into existence as we know it today.

He also might be referring to Benjamin Franklin Bailer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_F._Bailar) who was postmaster general and a stamp collector.

--- it appears they changed it to FDR in the report ----

I really enjoyed watching that. I wasn't aware that there was a district in NYC devoted to stamps? Also, the shops "wares" looked mostly new but of course she not being a collector wouldn't have known what to look for perhaps..but that's my own opinion..lol It made me very happy to see that child at the end genuinely enjoying his collection. That's what it's all about. I don't agree though, that email has 100% replaced the mail! I'm sure it's very large percentage but I still get mail with actual stamps on them so I didn't agree with her little quip there but I think she was just trying to make her point? Thank you for the video wt1! -Jeff

Franklin was changed to FDR, which is almost certainly what it was meant to be.

I attended the ASDA show covered in the story. The show was crowded and the dealer bourse was sold out, with representation from around the world. I spent over $500 on stamps and also spent an enjoyable hour going through boxes of unsorted albums and collections. I found the selection of material excellent. Establishing a personal relationship with a reputable dealer is invaluable, as is the chance to see material before you buy. The exhibits were outstanding and appealed to a number of my interests. Congratulations ASDA. For anyone who hasn't attended a significant national show, do it. Philately isn't in decline, it's just different as compared to past decades. It's great to see this covered.

FDR certainly makes a lot more sense.

Revcollector: Thanks for helping the hobby by reaching out to the youth! (I was a childhood stamp collector who came back to it as an adult.)

I was also at the ASDA show: Thursday, I spent a few hours with one dealer I already knew; Friday, I spent a few hours with a dealer that I've wanted to meet. I mostly met with his covers, but what can you do?

Ever eager for a moment of fame & glory, I wondered if I would be caught in a background shot; I then realized, duh, that if I hadn't noticed the camera crew, I'd probably escaped their notice, too.

Pat Herst's "Nassau Street" is available on www.abebooks.com for a very few dollars; someday, I'll run across someone who did *not* like his story-telling.

While the national shows *are* special, it is not easy to exhaust the possibilities at the regional shows, either. I enjoyed NOJEX, for example, both the exhibits & the dealers.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey
