More precisely it's an excise tax stamp (van Dam catalogue #FX36), and it looks like the cheque was from the Bank of Montreal. These two leaf excise stamps were issued between 1915 and 1928. Between 1922 and 1927 the tax rate on cheques was 2¢ per $50.
