Thanks for the article wt1

Granted, wert and all, the Nazis have made the symbol of the swastika a negative one. However, many North American native tribes used the swastika as a good luck symbol. In fact, the town just 14 miles South where I live used to have a swastika printed on its' gates into the town (Gravenhurst) but, since the war, the swastika is not present there anymore. (Actually, the vessel RMS "Segwun" in my avatar is based in Gravenhurst.)

In some cultures, ancient and otherwise, the swastika was used for various reasons, religious and for other reasons, but, not associated with hate or anti-semitism. You can also find postcards of pre WW I and shortly after from US and Canada with this symbol as well, usually regarding it as a good luck symbol.

Thanks guys for that information...also the swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. That even pre-dates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!....Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BC.

It also appears on Japanese maps as the symbol for a temple.

Unfortunately, I did not know this on my first trip to Japan -- imagine my surprise!

And that was also before the internet and this helpful page:

Here's the curious thing about Swastika (Clinton County), NY. Although it did have a post office from 1913-1958, the State of New York wanted to name it "Balsamdale" but the USPO and Postmaster General wouldn't acknowledge it, so it remained "Swastika"!

One of the few map references showing Swastika, NY:
