Stamp Insider for November–December 2014

The November–December issue of the Stamp Insider, journal of the Federation of New York Philatelic Societies, is online and available for free download in PDF format or viewing online with page turning. It is available in both PDF and HTML5-friendly format at:

In the lead article — "Revenue Stamp Usage on Cartes de Visite" — author Steve Swain examines in depth the Civil War luxury tax that an Act of Congress imposed on "photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes or any other sun-pictures." It is generously illustrated, and shows many unusual usages.

Other articles include "New Haven Philatelic Society Turns 100." In cooperation with the New Haven Historical Society, it produced 1,000 anniversary covers bearing restrikes of the New Haven postmaster provisional. The die had been last used to produce restrikes in 1932, to help defray club's $1,000 outlay to purchase it for the museum. A sidebar article examines originals and restrikes of the die.

"The Case of the Missing Pouches" examines of foibles of early railway post office clerks and is paired with the featured video — "Catching Mail on the Fly," silent film from 1903 showing a train dropping a mail pouch and snatching another from a mail crane without stopping.
